Not once.

By the fourth time, the flight attendant started noticing too.
The man would quietly unbuckle his seat belt, lean over me, and whisper, “Sorry.”
Then he’d disappear down the aisle.
The third time, I finally asked, “Are you okay?”
He smiled.
“Yeah. Just a nervous flyer.”
I laughed.
“Then you picked the wrong place to sit.”
He laughed too.
But about an hour into the flight, he got up again.
This time, he looked pale…
When he came back, he sat down and kept staring at his phone.
A few minutes later, his hands started shaking.
I thought he was sick.
“Do you need the flight attendant?”
He shook his head.
Then he whispered, “My daughter is in the hospital.”
I looked at him.
“She had surgery this morning. I’m flying home because they told me she might not make it through the night.”
Suddenly, all those trips to the restroom made sense.
He wasn’t using the bathroom.
He was going there because it was the only place on the plane where he could quietly break down without anyone watching.
I didn’t know what to say.
So I just put my hand on his shoulder.
He nodded.
For the rest of the flight, he didn’t get up again.
When we landed, he grabbed his bag and rushed toward the exit.
Before he disappeared, he turned around.
“Thanks for not making me explain myself.”
I watched him run through the terminal.

A father and his four children were swept away inside their car when raging floodwater carried them off the road.
Several strangers saw the family trapped, but the current was too strong to safely reach them. Then a township worker came by driving a backhoe.
The strangers flagged him down, climbed into the bucket and rode through the floodwater toward the car.
When they arrived, the father was fighting the current with his youngest child in his arms, while three more children were still trapped near the car.
The men held onto each other’s belts and formed a human chain from the backhoe to the family.
All four children and their father made it out safely.
