All of the centuries of Indigenous resistance to White colonization should never be forgotten and should always taught in U.S. schools because Native Americans were the good guys in that long fight for freedom—so many brave people fought the good fight for their land and liberty!

Columbus visited exactly zero of today’s 50 states.
The United States gave him a federal holiday anyway. Quite a welcome for a man who never arrived.

Indigenous Peoples Day is today and it’s important to remember Native Americans are not merely historical people. We are still here and the oldest injustice in US history—the dispossession of land from hundreds of Indigenous nations mainly by fraudulent treaties—is still ongoing!

I think this is sad because the Lakota people never wanted their sacred mountain defaced in this way with presidents who were all terrible for Native Americans with policies creating every problem facing Native American people throughout many decades. And it looked better before!

My mother and all of her siblings. In these places, separated into Onion Lake, Delmas and Beardy's. They destroyed a family. We brought the culture home again. They took their languages, we are learning them. They told them to never be native, we ARE NATIVE. Never assimilate. 🪶
We are here because our parents and grandparents survived your “schools.”

Circa 1900. Near Browning, Montana. Blackfeet Reservation.
Imagine hearing this drum somewhere out on the Montana plains.
Before you ever saw who was making the sound.
Before you knew what was happening.
Just that deep, steady beat carrying across open country.
If you were a stranger traveling through this landscape 125 years ago, I imagine it would stop you cold.
In this photograph are two Blackfoot men identified as Black Bull and Stabs-Down-By-Mistake, standing beside a large drum during a Sun Dance near Browning, Montana. They wear dentalia necklaces, moccasins, and ceremonial clothing.
That drum was not background noise.
In ceremonies like the Sun Dance, sound, rhythm, prayer, sacrifice, community, and spiritual life were bound together.
And out here, on this huge, exposed country, the sound could carry.
That is the part I keep thinking about.
A lone traveler.
Wind across the grass.
Nothing around for miles.
Then somewhere in the distance...
boom.
boom.
boom.
You may not understand the ceremony.
You may not know who is there.
But you would know immediately that you had entered someone else’s world.
And on the northern plains, that world had existed long before railroads, towns, or reservation boundaries ever appeared on a map.
That drum would have meant something very different depending on who was hearing it.
But I doubt anyone heard it and ignored it.

White Army soldiers back in 1864 rode up on 500 Cheyenne and Arapaho civilians who thought they were under US government protection due to a recent treaty. Instead, those troops murdered over 200 innocent people at the Sand Creek Massacre. This should be in every US history book!

I bought this original photo of my great great great grandpa Iseeo—a great Kiowa warrior who fought for the Indigenous way of life against the US Army in the Red River War. I think it is really awesome he and other brave fighters took up arms against the US despite disadvantages!

The first photo here is rare because 1800s people never smiled in pictures. That Native girl was named Oobe. Her friend who is not smiling was my grandma’s grandma Mabonia. Both girls were Kiowa and grew up in the forced assimilation era but worked to protect Indigenous cultures!

“They made us many promises, more than I can remember, but they never kept but one—they promised to take our land and they took it”
Red Cloud of the Oglala Lakota said this of US policy to redistribute Native land and resources based not on merit, but race, to the Whites—awful!
