Must-read essay by the inimitable @RoyaMahboob in today’s WSJ.
If we’re not going to ban it, we should ban the company’s ability to throttle or ban bettors who actually win. The issue isn’t simply that this guy is betting so much. It’s that because this guy is betting so much, we know he’s bad at it or he’d be banned or severely throttled and wouldn’t be able to bet this much. If these companies are gonna exist, they need to feel the pain of losing too. It would force them to control bet sizes.
I've spent weeks discussing AI extinction with everyone — engineers, computer scientists, policymakers, philosophers.
I’ve talked about it on my podcast and on national TV.
I’ve finally reached my conclusion:
This is the dumbest conversation of the year.

I think @JVLast would love this. At least if it wasn’t this admin doing it.
BREAKING: Palantir's Alex Karp says OpenAI will never IPO.
His theory: nationalization is the only real exit.
When asked what the S-1 risk factors look like, Karp's answer was simple: there is no S-1.
The liability exposure from frontier AI is so large that no public market can absorb it.
The only entity big enough to backstop it is a government.
If Karp is right, OpenAI doesn't become the next Google.
It becomes a utility. Or a weapon.
The most valuable AI company in the world may have no clean path to public markets.
Is nationalization actually the most likely outcome for frontier AI labs?
Blessed are the [innately curious], for they will inherit the earth.

My current book is on armor sciences. I will read every book on the topic for my company. Eventually I will be the most well-read in the world on the topic of ballistic and explosive material science.

SpaceX s-1 revealed way more BTC on balance sheet than anyone expected

I have read all seven (7) of the most comprehensive anti-crypto / anti-bitcoin books that have ever been published, and none of them make a compelling argument as to why bitcoin will not be the future monetary system of the world. They make every other conceivable argument about every other cryptocurrency, and they meticulously document every scam that has ever taken place in or around “crypto,” but nowhere in all of that can they seem to find a coherent and logical argument against bitcoin itself, or why bitcoin won’t eventually become the default monetary system of the world.
Every time I read a new anti-crypto / anti-bitcoin book, I am more convinced than ever of the merits of bitcoin, and my conviction only grows stronger every time someone attempts to take their best shot at bitcoin but fails to put forward anything even remotely convincing. It is true that most other cryptocurrencies will go to zero, and some are outright scams, but that does not change the fact that the real Bitcoin (BTC) stands alone as the most amazing technological invention of the 21st-century, and the most perfect monetary system to be adopted worldwide.

This is truly a great man. He has invested more in Ukraine than 185 countries combined.
Meet Howard Buffett, Warren Buffett’s middle son. He is 71 years old. He dropped out of college three times. He drinks Dr Pepper and looks for a McDonald’s wherever he travels.
Since the beginning of the war, his foundation has become the largest private donor to Ukraine: $1.4 billion.
Over four years, he has personally visited Ukraine 27 times.
In April 2022, he saw burned-out agricultural machinery and called the president of John Deere:
“How many combines are available in Europe?”
“Fifteen. All of them were supposed to go to Russia.”
“I’ll take them all.”
Then came all the available New Holland equipment in Europe. Altogether, more than 100 tractors and combines were provided to Ukrainian farmers.
He even tested demining equipment himself - on his own farm in Illinois, detonating explosives beneath rollers. When a Ukrainian deputy minister expressed doubts, Buffett told him:
“Stop counting my tractors. If necessary, I’ll blow up a thousand of them.”
Andriy Stavnitser initially asked him for $1 million for Superhumans. Buffett asked how much was needed to build the entire center.
“$14 million.”
“Okay. And what do you expect in return?”
“Nothing. Build it.”
Today, his support for Superhumans has reached $77 million, and the center has treated more than 1,700 patients.
But his largest area of spending is neither agricultural machinery nor prosthetics.
It is food: 642 million meals.
And that is only part of it:
* 344,000 windows replaced after Russian attacks;
* 9 bridges, 4 power plants, 2,500 generators, and 18 DNA laboratories;
* Much of Bucha rebuilt with his funding.
“I already have more friends in Ukraine than I do at home,” he says.
He celebrates birthdays in Ukraine, comes for Christmas, and even has a Ukrainian godson.
Friends, this is truly a great man - someone who understands that he cannot take all his money with him when he leaves this world.
I simply want to thank him and wish him well.
Whatever else one may say, this is real help from a person who had no personal obligation to Ukraine.
He simply chose to help.

I cannot impart on progressive folks more strongly that it is not just Sam Altman sounding these alarms. I also do not care for or trust Sam Altman! But listen to the people actually building this stuff who are freaked out. Maybe they are wrong but they are not part of some profit motivated psyop.

I am glad the crisis in US-Denmark & US-NATO relations, triggered by Trump's threat to invade Greenland, appears to be over. We can all celebrate that.
But let's be clear: this "historic agreement" is just a slight tweak to what's been in place for decades, at least based on what's been leaked so far. THREAD 1/

Yes. Those of us who vehemently opposed him were always correct. Correct to oppose him. Correct to criticize those Republicans who went along with him. Correct to refuse the cowardly anti-anti position that acted like Democrats were worse. It was all predictable. We predicted it.
