Our new paper led by Mattia Mancini explores the trade-offs in the UK's #BiodiversityNetGain policy, and shows how current implementation compares, on multiple dimensions, to options which maximise either biodiversity gain or access for people sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Brilliant to work with @NatDuffus on this important paper. The culmination of several years' work examining how the BNG Metric lines up with primary invertebrate field data @oxmartinschool @NatureRecovery. 1/2

While area-condition metrics are an incredibly helpful tool for decision making, accompanying data remains essential. Without it, we risk not fully understanding our biodiversity impacts! 6/6
We discuss some reasons why this might be in the paper and the importance of using real on-the-ground species data collection to understand patterns of species diversity. 5/6
We find that invertebrate communities are incredibly variable even between habitats of the same type and condition! Indeed, some sites which received relatively low metrics scores were among the most invertebrate rich & abundant. 4/6
Here we collected data on ground inverts across a range of sites over 2 years, to test the relationship between invertebrate biodiversity and scoring by the metric used to evidence BNG in England. This metric is the basis for a (growing) number of metrics globally. 3/6
Proxy metrics based on combined habitat area and condition are proliferating globally in response to demand for simple, standardised ways to measure biodiversity. This includes for evidencing No Net Loss, Net Gain, and biodiversity uplift to evidence biodiversity credits. 2/6

Where are all the butterflies?
Years of habitat destruction, climate breakdown and pesticide use have taken their toll. If we're to restore nature and save our butterflies and moths we must act now.
