What’s it like in space? Is Earth as beautiful as the pictures? Are the stars even brighter from orbit? What would YOU #askanastronaut? ✋🗣️👩‍🚀 For pupils at three lucky UK schools that’s exactly the opportunity they’ll have as part of National Astronomy Week. ⤵️

There's been a lot of hype about catching the planetary parade over the last few days, but it'll be visible until around mid-February. Truthfully, the beginning of February (during @NatAstroWeek ) will be a great time to try and spot 6 planets in the sky! spacecentre.co.uk/news/space…

5 Stargazing Challenges - National Astronomy Week 2025

Have a go at our 5 stargazing challenges as we chase the Moon across the sky this National Astronomy week (1-9 February 2025).

It's the last day of @NatAstroWeek! Join @LucindaLand for tonight's discussion about whether humans could live on Mars and when we might see the first human mission to the red planet. Book your free tickets here: astronomyweek.org.uk/mars-ev…
6pm: Could humans live on Mars? Could we go there in our lifetime? Join Lucinda Offer (Royal Astronomical Society and Executive Director of the Mars Society) and guests to discuss and debate living and working on Mars, and meet the people who are trying to make this a reality. 7pm: Remote observations of Mars.

It's #NAW2020, focusing on Mars. Johannes Kepler analysed Tycho Brahe's observations of Mars, and discovered that the orbit is an ellipse, one of the laws of planetary motion which he published in in Astronomia Nova (1609).
Johannes Kepler, Astronomia nova … tradita commentariis de motibus stellae Martis … (1609) In this book Kepler worked out the two laws which gave the position of the planet Mars (m) both in space and in time, represented here in combination. (These two laws are represented individually on the display panel.) The path is an Archimedean ellipse ambc with known semi-axes having the distance mn constructed geometrically from the Sun (n), while area amn measures time in orbit. This theoretical structure compellingly satisfies the superb naked-eye observations of Tycho Brahe. Urania in her chariot is bringing a wreath to crown Kepler's triumph.
