Early this morning, I was at City Hall filing the necessary documents to run for Mayor of Highland Park in the April 2027 election.
It's about investing in public safety and infrastructure, protecting our environment, and making sure the next generation sees Highland Park as a place where they want to build their future.
That reality is painful, and for so many, it is deeply personal. Even in a community that strives to lead with compassion and inclusion, hate can find its way to our doorstep. When it does, we must respond by standing together and reaffirming who we are and the values we share.
We recognize that incidents like this can bring fear, hurt and anger, particularly for those who feel targeted or vulnerable. To anyone who feels afraid or threatened, know that you are not alone. Your community stands with you. We will not be intimidated. We will not be silent.
Hate has no home in Highland Park.

This afternoon, the City of Highland Park Police Department responded to an incident of antisemitic vandalism in a public park. Park District of Highland Park personnel responded immediately. The police will continue to work with the Park District to investigate the incident.
Out of an abundance of caution, the police have instituted a close watch on houses of worship. This incident comes at a particularly meaningful time for our Jewish community, as families move from the solemn reflection of the High Holy Days into joyful preparations for Sukkot.
An act of antisemitism was reported in our community today and has once again shaken many of us. On behalf of the City of Highland Park, we condemn this incident in the strongest terms.

Delighted for my @strongcities colleague @andyburnham, now Britain’s Prime Minister. Confident he will do excellent work at 10 Downing!

This is what Trump's done to the people's house:
A third of it is rubble.
Another third is a cage match.
What a metaphor.
Former Pittsburgh Mayor @billpeduto and I were pleased to have our op-ed: Global Crises, Local Impacts: How Mayors Need to Prepare, published yesterday in @just_security, a law and policy journal produced by the @RCLS_NYU at @nyulaw. justsecurity.org/135998/glob…
As the ripples of global crises hit local communities, mayors need to be ready to respond. While public safety planning is always paramount, community resilience and preparedness are also part of the critical dynamic for moving forward in the aftermath.
As Senior Advisers, @billpeduto & I have worked with the team at @Strong_Cities Network providing a Prevention Academy & resources to support cities across the US. Go to strongcitiesnetwork.org for more information about this global organization & the great work they are doing.
