Yes, some people made extremely offensive names. Nobody is defending actual hate speech. But treating every forced rename and especially every full beta revocation as an open-and-shut “you deserved it, no appeals, we can see every character you’ve ever made” moment is tone-deaf and short-sighted. Here’s what this is actually causing: 1. A wave of genuine confusion and resentment. A lot of players created dual names thinking the filter was live. Some used edgy jokes, references, or random generator results that later got flagged. Others claim they got hit for names that weren’t even that bad. When the response is “I read the list, no sympathy,” it makes every borderline case feel like they were treated as malicious actors instead of beta testers testing a brand-new system. 2. Zero trust in the process. “No appeals, Customer Service cannot help” + “we can see every character on the account” lands like a power flex. Even if only 0.18% of names led to full removals, the people who lost access (many of whom paid for the upgrade/beta) now feel permanently burned. That feeling spreads fast. 3. It makes the dual-name system feel like a trap. You gave players a fun new feature, the filter wasn’t ready, people experimented (some poorly), and the hammer came down hard with a public scolding. Instead of “we messed up the timing on the filter, here’s how we’re fixing it and here’s a path for appeals on borderline cases,” the message was pure contempt. 4. Community fragmentation. Forums and social media are now full of people arguing about who “deserved it,” people claiming false bans, people celebrating the bans, and a growing group who just feel the vibe has turned hostile. The excitement around Forever is getting poisoned by this drama right when you need goodwill heading into launch. Beta is supposed to be messy. New systems get abused. The correct move is clear rules, consistent enforcement, a working filter, and a way for people who made dumb but not malicious mistakes to course-correct. The current approach — manual review + permanent loss of access + public “no sympathy” — turns testers into enemies.
