East Africa Braces for a Powerful El Niño. East Africa is preparing for another powerful El Niño, with forecasts warning of heavier-than-normal rains towards the end of 2026 and risks extending into early 2027. In Tanzania, vulnerable communities in Dar es Salaam, including Tandale and Jangwani, face heightened risks from flooding, landslides and disease outbreaks. Poor drainage, unsafe sanitation and limited resources could make the impact more severe. Tanzania has activated a national emergency plan, but the funding gap remains stark: preparations could require 730 billion shillings, while the 2026–27 budget allocates just 10 billion. As governments push for greater climate finance without adding to their debt, the challenge is protecting millions of people before the floods arrive. Himalayas’ Ancient Migration Is Under Threat For generations, Bakarwal families have followed seasonal migration routes across the Himalayas. Now, unpredictable weather is disrupting a tradition passed down for centuries. The western Himalayas received 65 per cent less winter precipitation than normal in 2025–26, forcing many herders to rely on costly truck transport as grazing cycles become increasingly uncertain. Beyond the financial burden, an older way of life is fading as younger generations move to other jobs and traditional knowledge of mountain routes, springs and pastures begins to disappear. Watch the full video to understand how climate change is reshaping one of the Himalayas’ oldest traditions. @Indiametdept @metsrinagar @Divcomjammu @TribalAffairsIn @OmarAbdullah #Bakarwal #JammuAndKashmir #Himalayas #ClimateChange #Pastoralists #India #IndigenousCommunities #Environment #NWS

Kenya has confirmed its ninth Ebola case, raising concerns about the outbreak spreading across borders in East and Central Africa. The latest patient is a close relative of Kenya’s first case, who died on October 5. Authorities have traced 135 contacts and quarantined 134. So far, transmission remains confined to the cluster, while the DRC reports more than 9,500 cases and 4,600 deaths. With cases also reported in Nigeria, containing the outbreak depends on early detection, isolation and contact tracing. The virus is the Bundibugyo strain, for which no licensed vaccine or specific treatment is available. A drone attack on Amiet Market in Abyei has killed at least 153 people, according to local reports, triggering mass protests over civilian safety. Residents, civil society groups, women, young people and traditional chiefs took to the streets, demanding that armed groups respect Abyei’s status as an area free of armed forces. South Sudanese officials blamed Sudan’s military, while a Sudanese military officer said the operation targeted fuel shipments allegedly intended for the Rapid Support Forces. The competing accounts have not been independently verified. Abyei remains disputed between Sudan and South Sudan.
