Ernie is checking on my Morse code sending practice with my ZN-SK single-lever paddle key from N3ZN. The unit (keyer, oscillator, etc) is the CW Pokémon Hamcube Pro.
I am a straight-key guy. I have to retrain my brain to do this paddle - very different...
I want to be really good at this (I want to send and receive at 30wpm), so, daily practice is my path forward.

I am returning to a first love in my lifelong study of computer science: artificial intelligence. In the middle to late 1980s, I focused on Expert Systems, building applications with rigid, hand-coded rules and decision trees to simulate logic. While fascinating, they hit severe bottlenecks. They were only as smart as our explicit programming and could not learn from raw data.
To bridge the gap to today, I am reading the newest addition to my syllabus, currently sitting on my teal journal next to a fountain pen: "Sutskever's List: Foundational ideas of modern AI" by Richard Heimann. Based on Ilya Sutskever's essential reading list, Heimann provides a guided journey through the historical connections and engineering breakthroughs that made modern deep learning possible.
The book highlights a complete departure from 1980s rigidity, shifting to neural networks, massive datasets, and immense computing power. Heimann covers AlexNet's GPU breakthroughs, ResNet proving the value of deeper network layers, sequence models, speech systems, the attention mechanism, and Transformers. He also explores hyperscale algorithms, reasoning models, and safe superintelligence.
As a medically-retired senior software engineer who built everything from early databases to modern Next.js applications, this transition is incredible. We moved from manually defining every edge case to designing architectures that discover their own patterns. I am excited to study these foundational models purely for mental challenge and personal curiosity, not for work.

🖋️ Men, do you #journal? As a #disabled #veteran, I journal as part of my #journey through #life. I created a #Facebook group for men who journal (or want to).
I started the group for us men who want to journal about our walk of life, our struggles, our learned lessons, and much more. It is a community for men dedicated to the practice of journaling. It's a space to build the habit, share insights, and discuss the analog tools that make writing a joy. In a digital world, unplug and recenter.

Meet our #outdoor #kittens!
Momma's 5: old enough to hang out and #play. Momma is our #feral #feline that is growing warm to me, allows me to #pet her, nearly can pick her up. 5 kittens are shy, but each day get braver. Soon, we take them to #veterinarian for fixing.

It arrived, today! I was waiting on the Micro PA50+ HF amplifier (13v, portable). The complete radio line-up is: Transceiver = (tr)uSDX (5w), Micro PA50+ (38 to 50 watts, depending on voltage supply), ATU-100 EXT (external antenna system matching box), a passive audio mixer, and the N3ZN-SP single-lever side-to-side paddle key. Battery is a 100 Amp-Hour LifPo. I check the Reverse Beacon Network to see if the auto-RF frequency detection and auto-keying (RF sensing) work right, such that the code I am creating is transmitted without any cutting. All seems to be working right. RBN shows my 48w CW signals making it out and about hours before dawn, in the wee hours of darkness, on 20 Meters.

Solar Cycle 25 surges past previous Cycle 24, marking a significant increase in solar activity this year--a remarkable uptick in solar activity, with the monthly average sunspot count soaring to 215.5! Additionally, the average 10.7-cm Radio Flux index for August reached an impressive 245.6! These figures not only surpass those of Cycle 24 but also indicate a robust ongoing solar cycle on par with Cycle 23 and 22. Autumn DX season may well be phenomenal!
