What could the Education Freedom Tax Credit mean for families across America? The numbers are pretty remarkable.
According to research by my colleague Dr. @parthurgraff, more than 42 million married couples could qualify for the full $3,400 federal tax credit by contributing to Scholarship Granting Organizations.
But what really caught my attention is the potential impact on students.
If donor participation reaches 10% by 2030, as Treasury projects, the program could generate enough funding to support:
- 2.5 million scholarships of $7,000 each, or
- 7 million scholarships of $3,500 each.
That same level of participation could increase federal support for K–12 education by 33%.
Having worked with families navigating educational options for years, I know how much access to additional resources can matter.
These projections help illustrate just how significant this program could become for families across the country.

Nevada Independent: Rocío Hernández: Joe Lombardo is running as an education governor. Here's how to grade his record.
thenevadaindependent.com/art…
When Gov. Joe Lombardo ran for his office in 2022, he made education a cornerstone of his campaign. His platform included expanding school choice, accountability and addressing school safety issues and low literacy proficiency rates. . . .
This year, Lombardo opted the state into a new federal school choice tax credit program that will launch next year. The program will allow organizations to provide scholarships to K-12 students to cover certain educational costs, including private schools.
During the education roundtable, Valeria Gurr, a senior fellow for the American Federation for Children, a national school choice advocacy group, said opting into that program was the most meaningful decision Lombardo has made for the state. It's anticipated that the majority of students in state and nationwide will meet the program's income eligibility requirements.
"This is going to come and change the landscape of education in Nevada," Gurr said.
More than 90% of Nevada students attend public schools. That’s why they could be among the biggest beneficiaries of the new federal Education Freedom Tax Credit. thenevadaindependent.com/art…

Heartlander News: Michaela Estruth: More than 50 million kids eligible for scholarships – if states join new federal tax credit program
heartlandernews.com/more-tha…
More than 90% of K-12 students nationwide will be eligible to receive scholarship funding under the new federal Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC), which takes effect in 2027, a new report finds.
The program has broad potential impact, but whether all states will choose to participate remains to be seen.
The tax credit, passed in last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, expands school choice by allowing nonprofit scholarship granting organizations to aggregate contributions of up to $1,700 each into awards for public, private and charter school students. Some homeschool students are also eligible, depending on state rules.
The American Federation for Children, which bills itself as America’s largest school choice advocacy organization, released a report Tuesday detailing the number of children who could benefit from the new program.
“No one has really put out an estimate of how many children could benefit,” AFC Senior Fellow Patrick Graff told Heartlander News in an interview. “And we are the American Federation for Children, after all, so, at the end of the day, we really care about children and families and their ability to access an education that works best for them.”
Graff’s report found an estimated 51.7 million children, or 91.7% of the nation’s K-12 population of 56.4 million, would qualify under the program’s rules, which allow families at or below 300% of their local median income to participate.
