A well-designed rent regulation policy can drive meaningful change by increasing transparency in tenancy agreements, establishing clear rent increase procedures, discouraging arbitrary charges, raising tenant awareness, and offering accessible dispute resolution.
However, these benefits must be weighed against Nigeria’s economic realities, including inflation, high construction and maintenance costs, expensive land and infrastructure, and a limited supply of affordable housing.
