For @TheIdeasLetter I wrote about Marc Bloch and the challenge of writing synthetic and structural history. Featuring the Annales, Pirenne, Keynes, fin de siècle social science, and the generalizing ambitions of Carlo Ginzburg and the micro-historians.

“Faced with the immensity of Hobsbawm’s achievements, it was hard not to look in the mirror and feel a sense of inadequacy. I wondered whether I might be able to learn from him. Could I one day cofound the most prestigious academic journal in my field or secure a six-figure book contract? Might I be invited to attend conference on a cruise ship in the Adriatic Sea or speak to a crowd of adoring fans in a town square in Brazil’(xiv).” hup.harvard.edu/file/feeds/P…

The conventional wisdom is the Democrats' big climate law failed to deliver votes, then died. That's wrong. My new study finds its factories moved 2.5 million votes—more than Trump's margin. And the law's still alive.

📰What was Bidenomics?
My new paper at @pasupdates uses developmental-state literature to reassess the IRA,CHIPSAct, and infrastructure law.I argue these policies were more than derisking: they marked a break with neoliberalism and revealed a no-longer hidden developmental state
