*Don’t Just Make Videos or Podcasts*
Build a Creator Company! Roberto Blake joins me
Getting views is not the same as building a business. Subscribers aren't automatically customers, and a successful YouTube channel doesn't necessarily mean you have built something sustainable.
In New Media Show #687, I talk with Roberto Blake about what comes after becoming a content creator and why more creators need to think of themselves as independent media companies rather than defining themselves by one format or platform. Roberto argues that being a podcaster, YouTuber, streamer, or blogger is increasingly just a distribution choice. The bigger issue is the value you create, the audience relationship you build, and what you actually own.
We get into the shift from audio-first thinking to broader creator media, why professionalism is more about preparation and performance than polished production, and how AI is changing the economics of being a creator. Roberto sees some of the strongest uses of AI in the operational work around content, including research, data analysis, transcription, organization, editing workflows, and other tasks that can free creators to spend more time on judgment, ideas, and relationships.
A major part of the conversation is about turning attention into a real business. Roberto describes his framework as “reach, reputation, revenue,” or in a business context, “traffic, trust, transaction.” Getting attention is only the beginning. The real value comes from earning trust and then creating products, services, memberships, intellectual property, or other business models around that relationship.
We also talk about what creators should own. That includes their brand, intellectual property, expertise, direct audience relationships, and the parts of the business that can survive changes at YouTube, Spotify, Apple, or any other platform. Roberto breaks creator businesses into three broad paths: entertainer, lifestyle brand, and thought leader, with different revenue and growth opportunities for each.
The conversation goes much deeper into AI, human creativity, likeness rights, AI labeling, synthetic media, and why Roberto believes the bigger risk is not simply AI-generated entertainment but the potential misuse of synthetic media by institutions or people trying to manipulate audiences.
The larger point is simple: creators should stop thinking only about the next piece of content and start thinking about what they are building around it.

Happy International Podcast Day!
I started podcasting on September 16, 2004, with the WebTalk World Radio Show. It’s hard to believe that was 22 years ago.
September and especially the 30th has always felt like podcasting’s birth month and day to me. I remember the excitement of those early days, when we were figuring out how to publish shows by hand editing RSS feeds and the amazing ability to reach listeners directly.
There was no clear roadmap and being a geek was required. We learned by doing and sharing what worked in the very collaborative and small community.
Podcasting helped lead the independent media revolution we’ve seen over the past 22 years. It gave more people a chance to be heard, without needing a radio station or a large media company to give them airtime and a voice. Some built businesses. Others found a community or simply had something worth sharing.
I’ve spent much of my career helping this medium grow, and I’m still doing it through the New Media Show. What has stayed with me most is the people I’ve met and the relationships that began with a conversation behind a microphone.
Thank you to everyone who has listened, joined me on a show, or supported this work over the years.
New Media Show is live again tonight at 6 pm EST / 3 pm PST here on LinkedIn.
What was the first podcast you listened to? Do we still have the same spirit as the earlier era had or have we lost something as it matured?

Great breakdown video on how we can look at New Media today. @ashnichrist - xitter.cf/ashnichrist/status/205…
Birth of the New Media Show:
Podcast Hall of Famers and 2004 podcast pioneers Todd Cochrane and Rob Greenlee started NewMediaShow.com @nmspodcast 14 years ago as a live video and podcast show largely in support of the podcasting industry, because podcasting was one of the earliest real representations of what New Media was becoming, along with streaming and downloadable media.
For almost all of those years, Todd was my co-host and partner in shaping the conversations, history, and industry perspective of the show. His passing in 2025 was a huge loss personally and professionally, and it also marked a meaningful transition point for the show.
While podcasting was always central to the New Media Show, Todd and I also always saw the show as being about more than just podcasting. It was about the larger transformation of media itself: how content is created, distributed, discovered, monetized, trusted, and consumed in the internet era.
I host the New Media Show now, and I feel its importance growing as the media landscape changes again. The show still honors its podcasting roots, but I am also expanding the scope even more clearly into the broader New Media industry.
Over the past 20+ years, this shift has grown into something that is now equal to, and in some areas larger than, traditional legacy media.
To me, the Creator Economy is not separate from New Media. It is a major engine inside it.
Indie creators, professional creators, podcasters, video hosts, streamers, authors, experts, and creator-led businesses are all helping form what I would call the New Media Industry.
They are fueling the growth, spread, monetization, and everyday audience adoption of media in the internet era.
New Media is really the next-generation replacement and internet expansion of traditional broadcast media. It is not just a platform category or a creator label. It is the broader transformation of how media is created, distributed, discovered, trusted, and consumed towards digital media.
So I see a lot of the Creator Economy discussion as more about audience, market, and business model segmentation for creators, not necessarily a clean split between the Creator Economy and New Media.
The Creator Economy is part of New Media. It is one of the forces driving it. @Scobleizer @ollieforsyth
Everyone is talking about "New Media" but wtf does it mean?
New Media has been a term since 1998, but the revitalized version is something new...
Here's why everyone (VCs, tradMedia, creators) is rushing into the category
What is "New Media"?
00:00 - 00:29 Intro
00:29 - 01:15 The Agenda
01:15 - 02:42 Creator Economy vs. New Media
02:42 - 03:56 Assets and Risk
03:56 - 05:23 The Audience Spectrum
05:23 - 08:37 Why No One Agrees
08:37 - 11:14 The New Media Framework
11:14 - 16:30 Framework in Action
16:30 - 18:28 Entertainment in Professional Media
18:28 - 19:10 The 2 Modes of New Media
19:10 - 21:37 Why VCs are Bullish
21:37 - 24:08 My Pivot
TLDW
- New media is the creator economy when it grows up and gets a real job. Different asset: position in an industry's conversation, not audience-as-business
- Entertainment is a requirement. Professional audiences are humans. We want media that is fun
- The category is two years old and massively undercrowded. Almost every consumer entertainment format hasn't been ported to a professional audience yet
What do you think? What did I miss?

Always appreciate being mentioned on the Podcasting 2.0 show with @adamcurry and Dave Jones.. this mention by them was mostly all for entertainment purposes.. if you look at the full context of the entire @NMSPodcast episode #660 with Brendan from @libsyn I praise the Podcasting 2.0 project and discuss the advantages of supporting it in RSS. But, the facts are that the big platforms have not supported the new tags and have an attitude that if it’s not invented by them then they will not support it for competitive reasons or core customer value reasons.
Not saying the new tags are not being supported at all, I truly wish and have for years supported Podcasting 2.0 tags and think we will see Alternate Enclosure tag get wider support - because Apple Podcasts adding HLS, while harming RSS at the same time.

Can Apple Make Video Podcasts Matter?
In episode #656 of the NewMediaShow dot com. Podcast Hall of Famer Rob Greenlee is joined by Jay Nachlis, Media Research VP at Coleman Insights.
Watch or Listen in Apple Podcasts/Spotify and via Link in Comments 👇👇👇👇👇👇
“It’s a timely and deeper conversation about Apple Podcasts moving more aggressively into HLS video streaming and what that really means for the future of podcasting, audience behavior, platform competition, and creator strategy in 2026.”
This episode goes far beyond the Apple announcement itself. Jay brings a strong audience research and brand strategy perspective to the conversation, and together we dig into the real question behind all of this: will Apple’s push into video actually change listener and viewer behavior, or is this simply Apple trying to catch up to audience habits that are already being shaped by YouTube and Spotify?
“Apple Podcasts still has major brand recognition in podcasting, but may face an uphill battle in the current environment where YouTube has become the default platform for video-based podcast discovery, and Spotify continues to build a more native monetization and creator ecosystem.”
We talk about how audience habits often outweigh platform features, why consumer perception matters as much as technical innovation, and whether Apple can reclaim any meaningful momentum in a category it helped establish years ago.
We also discuss how this shift is creating a more fragmented publishing environment for creators. Audio and video are no longer just different formats. They increasingly represent different user expectations, different discovery paths, and different monetization opportunities.
“We discuss the growing need for creators to think strategically about separate audio and video feeds, platform-native publishing, HLS streaming delivery, audience experience, and the long-term risks of overreliance on closed ecosystems.”
Jay and I also explore the broader competitive chessboard. That includes YouTube’s dominance in video & video podcast consumption, Spotify’s continued attempts to define its role in both audio and video, and even whether players like Netflix could successfully move into podcast-adjacent content formats. This episode is really about where podcasting is headed as a medium, not just one Apple feature update.
If you are a podcaster, creator, media strategist, advertiser, or platform watcher trying to understand where podcasting, video, discovery, and monetization are all heading next, this is an episode you should not miss.
