All in all, our results suggest that cortisol may regulate oral microbiome richness, but that a history of caregiving adversity weakens that relationship. Adversity also has direct associations with the oral microbiome independently of cortisol. (6/7)

Our future work will use longitudinal data and higher-resolution microbiome sequencing to uncover more about the relationship between the oral microbiome and mental health, especially in people with a history of adversity exposure. (7/7)
