The Perfect Storm: irresponsible pet owners dump kittens they can't give away. Kittens turn feral. Seen on camera at possible bilby burrow where threatened numbats, woylies, chuditch, stone-curlews also seen. WA Councils can't bring in containment laws.

Happy International🐈Day! We want to celebrate all the responsible #petcats owners. Desexing, microchipping, providing toys, play, love, spots to rest, litter trays & stopping roaming is best for cats, keeps them close to enjoy & reduces angst & costs. Here's to good pet owners!

Habitat restoration is a great way of protecting wildlife, increasing native vegetation and reducing hunting by introduced predators like feral cats and foxes. It is important to not plant weedy species, and for greater success control rabbits (deer, pigs, goats) and weeds.
🌳 It’s #NationalTreeDay! Before you plant, consider:
🌱 Are the trees truly local & native?
🌿Have you prepared the site for success and controlled weeds and rabbits 🐇
Effective revegetation starts with smart prep. loom.ly/djVl8NQ

After great effort, Phillip Is. was declared #fox free in 2017, protecting the island's wildlife e.g. penguins & bandicoots. In April, 40 yrs after going extinct, a cool critter with extreme camouflage & eerie call was reintroduced, the bush stone-curlew.

Happy National Tree Day 🌱🌳 Help us protect our native wildlife from hunting introduced #feralcats & #foxes by planting shelter. Planting local natives, mixed trees, shrubs, grasses & understory species provides habitat for our native animals & insects.

ALT unique and tiny numbat sheltering in a log poking it's long sticky ant collecting tongue out at the camera. Numbats are listed as endangered with only two populations surviving outside of zoos and fenced areas. Hunting by introduced cats and foxes threatened these beautiful animals. Clearing their habitat has made them very vulnerable.
A recent paper by NSW DPIRD & a Nth NSW farmer reported local high fox numbers in response to lambing. 21 foxes shot in 1hr in 1.4 km² & 11 over next 5 days highlights strong attraction lambs are to foxes. Effective fox management protects lambs & wildlife

Introduced #feralcats & #foxes impacts 33 X native predators! @AridRecovery show native animals ⬆ after rain, spread out & repopulate areas where they ⬇ in drought. Cats & foxes stop booms & recolonisation. We must manage 🦊😾to protect our wildlife.

Pet cat containment isn't about demonising cats, they make great pets, or singling out cat owners. It is about protecting pet cats from disease & injury, protecting urban native wildlife, & bringing cat ownership into line with all other domestic animals.
watoday.com.au/national/west…
Impact on native wildlife & pets of urban foxes is trickiest to manage. Fox numbers are highest in cities like Perth, Melbourne & Sydney. Perth councils are getting together to try a coordinated management approach to protect native urban wildlife like turtles, bandicoots & birds
As Chair, I'm hopeful this unprecedent approach from Perth South West will create a framework for the entire Swan Coastal Plain and give our unique fauna a fighting chance.
