Named after one of the great champions of liberty of the 20th century, the #MargaretThatcher Awards recognise that the secret of freedom is courage.
But #courage alone is not enough, it needs to be told and acknowledged, so that it can inspire others to follow.
This year the Night of Conservatism comes to Brussels, for a second edition that will once again bring together the conservative community.

What does “iron leadership” mean today?
That’s the question we are asking 50 years after the Soviet press tried to insult #MargaretThatcher with the name “Iron Lady”, but instead she wore it with pride.
Today at the Press Conference “Margaret Thatcher’s Iron Leadership: Defending Free Societies in Europe, Fifty Years On”, at the European Parliament, together with:
🔸@NProcaccini - ECR Group Co-Chair and New Direction President,
🔸@robertszile - European Parliament Vice-President and New Direction Vice-President,
🔸 Stephen Jones - New Direction Research Fellow,
🔸 Michael Strauss - ECR Group Spokesperson,
we reflected on Thatcher’s legacy and defence of freedom and #Western values. In a time of renewed threats and growing polarisation, Europe needs leaders of that calibre.
☞ That’s why the second edition of the Margaret Thatcher Awards will honour those who carry her legacy forward on the 9th of December in Brussels.
The first recipients announced are:
🔹 @Bart_DeWever Wever, Prime Minister of Belgium
🔹 @Ayaan, Somali politician, writer and activist
🔹 Nicolas de Villiers, creator of the Puy du Fou
🔹 John Rhys-Davies, British actor and voice actor
🔹The Camino de Santiago and Italian Lyrical Opera will also be recognised, as symbols of the culture that makes Europe worth defending.
More names will be announced in the coming weeks - stay tuned.

50 years ago, one of the Soviet Union's main newspapers, Krasnaya Zvezda, described #MargaretThatcher as the “Iron Lady”.
The Soviets had meant it as an insult and instead she adopted it and turned it into an integral part of her identity.

Last Saturday, at L'Italia dei Conservatori , hosted by @FGTatarella together with New Direction and @nazione_futura, we brought the European perspective to the table with our panel "Conservatives in Italy, Europe and Beyond."
