On this day in 1996 – exactly 30 years ago – Tyneside witnessed arguably the greatest, most jaw-dropping 90 minutes in Newcastle United's modern history.
But the crowning glory came in the 83rd minute, when Belgian defender Philippe Albert famously spotted Peter Schmeichel off his line and executed an exquisitely audacious 25-yard chip to seal the historic 5–0 rout.
Today marks an historic day in the history of Newcastle.
98 years ago, on the 10th October 1928, King George V and Queen Mary officially opened the Tyne Bridge.

Today marks a legendary anniversary in the modern history of Newcastle United. Exactly 27 years ago, on 19th September 1999, Sir Bobby Robson walked out at St James' Park for his first home match as manager – and his team delivered an absolute masterclass.
@alanshearer, revitalised under his new manager, spectacularly scored five of the eight goals, becoming only the second player in Premier League history to score five in a single match.
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. While the devastation of that day fundamentally changed the world, the story of one Gateshead-born survivor remains a remarkable, if lesser-known, piece of North East history.
In the aftermath, news photographs captured a bloodied, dust-covered Sleigh walking away from the devastation, miraculously still clutching his briefcase. He later discovered the bag was covered in slashes from flying glass, believing it had shielded him from further injury.
