Earlier this month ProPublica tried to blame prolife states post-Dobbs for a big recent increase in ectopic pregnancy deaths.
@Mr_Jamie_B_Hall accessed the underlying CDC data, and it tells a very different story:
The big jump in ectopic-related deaths occurs a year before Dobbs. So hard to pin it on Dobbs.
It occurs in both pro-life and pro-abortion states. Though it is higher in pro-life states.
What could the explanation be?
The big jump occurs right after the removal of the last remaining in-person safeguard for the abortion pill, and women in pro-life states probably purchased online mail-order abortion pills at higher rates than in pro-abortion states.
Hence the jump occurring when and where and at the rates it did.
The removal of the in-person dispensing requirement for the abortion pill, not Dobbs, is most likely to blame.

For years, following my student days at Harvard and Yale, I dreamed (and felt pressured to keep dreaming...) about being hired as tenure-track professor & having a long career at a university or liberal arts college. The academic job market over time has proven to have different ideas. So my professional priorities as a historian have shifted over time accordingly.
But while I miss university classroom teaching at times, I can't help also admitting -- when I see how truly bad things are getting re. the substitution of AI for actual teaching and actual learning at my alma mater and other (very expensive) higher-ed institutions -- that I am relieved most of the time NOT to have to be facing, and fighting, day in and out, what Prof. Jill Lepore writes about here in this Crimson piece, "Artificial Education."
To my friends who ARE teaching at liberal arts colleges and universities for their bread-and-butter, I admire and root for all of you who are doing the hard work of holding the line, as best you can, in favor of the *human* part of advancing humanistic education.
