As Uganda enters another rainy period, property owners, developers and occupants must pay closer attention to the condition of their buildings and the surrounding environment, following weather and disaster-risk alerts issued by the Government.
These rains, expected across Uganda, will not only test drainage systems and roads. They will also test buildings.
For a building owner, prolonged or intense rainfall can expose weaknesses that may otherwise go unnoticed: leaking roofs, blocked drainage, eroded foundations, saturated ground, failing retaining walls and structural cracks.
That is why the recent weather warnings should also be treated as a building safety alert. The first question should therefore be: how will this rain affect my building?

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake whose epicentre was estimated to emerge from Bukabuye, Tanzania close to Uganda’s border, at 5:23 AM.
This follows a magnitude 4.5 earthquake in Nakasongola in May.
Tremors may have reached parts of Uganda, including 𝐼𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑖𝑟𝑜, 𝑁𝑡𝑢𝑛𝑔𝑎𝑚𝑜, 𝑅𝑢𝑘𝑢𝑛𝑔𝑖𝑟𝑖, 𝐾𝑎𝑏𝑎𝑙𝑒, 𝑀𝑏𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑟𝑎, 𝐵𝑢𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑛𝑦𝑖, 𝑆ℎ𝑒𝑒𝑚𝑎, 𝑅𝑎𝑘𝑎𝑖, 𝐾𝑦𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑎, 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑎𝑘𝑎, 𝐾𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑛𝑔𝑢, 𝐿𝑤𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑜, 𝐿𝑦𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑒, 𝑀𝑝𝑖𝑔𝑖, 𝑊𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑠𝑜 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐾𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑙𝑎.
As NBRB undertakes a nationwide study on building resilience to earthquakes, today’s event highlights the importance of understanding how our buildings respond to seismic activity.

Ensuring building compliance requires routine monitoring of Building Committee activities. That is why @NBRBug spent the day in Buvuma auditing its Building Committee to assess its operations, identify gaps and strengthen enforcement of building standards. @ERBUganda @ARBUganda @UIPE_Uganda

UPDATE: ENFORCEMENT OPERATION IN RUKUNGIRI
Following numerous complaints about illegal building operations in Rukungiri Municipality and District, the NBRB Enforcement Team conducted an operation on Friday and Saturday, resulting in the issuance of stop orders to 17 building sites. Owners and workers were also directed to record statements.
Several sites lacked building permits, were engaging unqualified personnel, or were undertaking illegal excavations that posed risks to lives and property.
The NBRB will continue conducting enforcement operations across the country to ensure compliance with the Building Control Act and other relevant laws.
Safe Buildings. Better Living.
