This week, CHAK made a strong stride forward in our quest to build #countyled health systems for #sustainable HIV care. The AFGHS–CHAK Daraja Project engaged the @Meru_county Health Management Team (CHMT) to strengthen collaboration and align project implementation with the county’s health #priorities. Across Meru County’s 11 sub-counties, the project currently supports 67 health facilities serving 22,841 clients on #antiretroviral therapy (ART). This #partnership is helping advance the transition towards #sustainable, county-led health #systems while safeguarding continuity of essential health services. Discussions centred on project milestones, service delivery priorities and strengthening county #ownership to sustain progress beyond donor-supported interventions. As Kenya advances towards more #sustainable health systems, #collaboration between national partners, county governments and health facilities remains critical to protecting the gains made in #HIVcare. Sustaining progress in HIV care takes strong #partnerships, local #leadership and shared #ownership. Together, we can build #resilient health systems that sustain essential services and improve health outcomes for #communities. #AFGHSCHAKDaraja #CountyLedHealthSystems #HIVCare #HealthSystemsStrengthening #MeruCounty #CHAK

For the Kenya PLHIV community, the Kenya–US Health Cooperation Framework came with the advantage of leveraging the Kenya government investment for health - something communities and civil society have been calling for.   The primary goal of the agreement remains to build a self-reliant Kenyan healthcare system aligned with the country's Universal Health Coverage agenda via Taifa Care. This guarantees ‘Health Sovereignty’   However, the main reason we rallied PLHIV community to support the framework is because it relies on a shared-responsibility investment split over five years - Kenya pledging $850 million (Sh110 billion) in domestic health expenditure. This funding scales up progressively to allow Kenya to gradually absorb financial responsibility for its health programs. Is that not what we have been calling for?   The framework also addresses the twin perennial challenges of Human Resources for Health (HRH) and Supply Chain Management. Over five years, Kenya will gradually absorb U.S.- funded front-line health workers onto local public payrolls and assume full procurement of health commodities. @MOH_Kenya @MOHMedServices @psmuthoni @HonAdenDuale @fnoluga @USEmbassyKenya @CDCKenya @CDCGlobal @AfricaCDC @KEMRI_Kenya @NASCOP @nsdcc_kenya @UNAIDS @WACIHealth @UHC2030 @DrMercyHealth @KenyaGovernors @HennetKenya @gnpplus @NTLDKenya @citizentvkenya @DrMercyKorir @OleItumbi

On the occasion of #WorldMengitisDay2026, we reminded the Kenya PLHIV Community to embrace Self-Care and ensure strict adherence to ART so as to avoid advanced HIV disease that manifests with Menengitis. Meningitis is a severe, potentially life-threatening inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and it is a major cause of illness and death among PLHIV. When a person has HIV, their immune system can become significantly weakened (especially if the CD4 cell count drops), making them highly susceptible to "opportunistic infections" that do not normally cause severe disease in healthy individuals  @MOH_Kenya @NASCOP @ICAP_ColumbiaU @iasociety @WHOKenya @gnpplus @afrocab_hiv @UNAIDS @CDCKenya @Ciheb_Kenya @ahfkenya @LVCTKe @UNITAID @AYARHEP_KENYA

Kenya is strengthening its health system through partnerships that improve efficiency, safeguard public health gains and support long-term sustainability and self-reliance. Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga said the Government-to-Government partnership with the United States is helping align technical and financial support with Kenya’s national health priorities. The approach directs resources towards stronger health institutions, efficient service delivery and sustainable investment. At the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Initiative on Health and the Economy panel, “One Year On: Retrospective on the America First Global Health Strategy,” Dr Oluga said Kenya has established structured mechanisms for technical engagement, governance, oversight, implementation and bilateral diplomacy. “We are keen on sustainability, we are keen on self-reliance, and we are keen on improving the in-built efficiencies of the healthcare system,” he said. The PS emphasised the need to protect progress in HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, maternal and child health, disease surveillance and global health security while building a resilient health system. The panel included Mr Brad Smith, Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy; Dra Andelys de la Rosa, Vice Minister of Public Health for the Dominican Republic; and Dr Kelechi Ohiri, Director-General of Nigeria’s National Health Insurance Authority. The session was moderated by Mr Chirfi Guindo, Executive Vice President for Strategic Access, Policy and Communications at Merck.
