Maybe cities should focus on this instead of installing surveillance cameras everywhere?
A prolonged blackout in Gary, Indiana, is exposing weaknesses in America’s aging power grid. Thousands were left without electricity for more than two weeks after severe storms damaged local infrastructure. As crews rebuild power lines, federal experts are warning of a much larger risk: a coordinated attack on the US grid could potentially cause outages lasting up to 18 months. America’s power grid depends on aging equipment and foreign supply chains. Around 60% of distribution lines have exceeded their 50-year lifespan, while many large transformers are decades old. Replacing them is increasingly difficult: transformer wait times have grown from about 12 weeks to 128 weeks, and US manufacturers produce only 20% of domestic demand. Some critical high-voltage components also have no US-based supplier. Rapid AI data center growth, EV adoption, and factory electrification are putting new pressure on an already aging US grid. A single large AI data center can use as much power as 20,000 homes, while transformer demand is expected to more than double 2020 levels by 2027. With 70% of U.S. transmission lines over 25 years old, the grid has little room for error during extreme weather. Subscribe to our newsletter: cnews.link/newsletter-7/
