Visited an elementary school today that intentionally schedules the same amount of time to teach math as they do for reading. Finally. I asked the principal how he made that happened. He looked at me sort of surprised and said, “That’s just what you do!” Yes sir. Yes it is. – at Indianapolis, IN

1) Calling "low" kids "strivers" doesn't help. 2) Being surprised a "low" child understood a mathematical concept through a strategy that isn't a standard US algorithm is not ok. Redefining how you think about your students is what you should be doing instead.
