Today was a good example of the fact that you still need to head to archives for #househistory sources! I had 4 boxes of sales particulars & deeds (like this) for properties all over Gloucestershire - which are not catalogued! Fun & games in the archives! 😀 #househistories

In the Northamptonshire village of Aynho many old cottages have Apricots growing up their walls. These were given to local householders by the Lord of the Manor. The locals were then required to pay their tithes in Apricots rather than money #howoldismyhouse

My small house had 3 tailors/machinists working from home in 1901 and I would love to know what it was like and where they worked. thebritishacademy.ac.uk/blog…

It is hard to believe that until the middle of the 19th century many families lived in one room cottages. The room often had a built-in box bed. In the 1900’s I found a family of 16 living in a one room house like this and they all survived. #howoldismyhouse #househistory #house

I’ll say it again Chancery records! And manorial records. And lots more. I only do histories of rural properties. Town ones have too many changes to street numbering, and street names.

Lovely afternoon summarising the history of a Manor House I’ve been researching. 186 #Chancery documents seen so far. 100 more at least in my “I need to continue” section. Affidavits the best. Thanks @UkNatArchives for these records. Essential for any house history.

Lay subsidy rolls at TNA are an essential source for any house history before 1650. Check the E179 database which also includes all hearth tax records not just those that may have been printed.

The scrubbing of the front steps outside the house was a practice still prevalent in the early 20th century.

I grew up in a late 1960s house built on site of prefabs in a road of interwar semis. Found occasional 'treasure' in the garden over the yrs- broken crockery sort of thing. Made me wonder why it was there even at a young age! Maps: 1884, 1938, today. #HouseHistoryHour #Maps

By pure accident in getting a job at Wakefield archives which has the WR Registry of Deeds. I had no idea the Registry existed before I got the role. I knew people researched house histories but never really thought how. So i find #househistoryhour each week v illuminating.
