They fixed Bösium Strip with Fire/Ice after I reported it. Nice to know that they sometimes also make time for older niche cards, with the raging stream of new stuff.

I think one thing that doesn't get discussed enough is how much Magic's gameplay has changed in recent years. The effort to make the game more accessible seems good on its face, but the end result seems to be much less strategic gameplay and less player agency (i.e. your decision matter less today than in the past). One thing doing the Best Standard bracket has reinforced to me is that the current version of Magic really is an aberration historically. The play pattern of two decks snowballing into each other and seeing who gets the better draw isn't how Magic was for most of its life. Rather than being about Universes Beyond or the number of sets, I think this is actually a product of Wizards spending the last decade or two trying to remove "feel bads" from the game to make it more accessible or appealing to new players. Stax has mostly been eliminated, land destruction too, counterspells minimized. As we've seen repeatedly on the Bracket, these "feel bad" cards actually do a ton of work balancing the game. Janky white weenie decks can compete thanks to Rishadan Port or Armageddon disrupting the opponent's resources. Sideboard hosers and color hate cards can swing matchups. This leads to, at least in my opinion, a lot of really interesting matches where you have to think about playing around sideboard cards, sequence plays to avoid the hate, sandbag lands to play around destruction, etc. I feel like this strategic depth is often missing today. When you add the elimination or minimization of "feel bads" to the spiraling power of creatures, you end up with a game that heavily incentivizes maximizing your gameplay rather than stopping your opponent's gameplan. We've also seen a lot of steps taken to minimize variance - mulligan rule changes, card designs (like MDFCs), everything generating card advantage to make sure you rarely run out of cards (because being empty handed feels bad...) - which I think compounds the problem. Less variance also pushes you to maximize your gameplan rather than stopping your opponent's gameplan, since you'll execute your gameplan optimally more often. The end result is an era of Magic that, at least to me, feels far less strategic than in the past. I still appreciate the game for what it is today, I still have fun playing it, but it's wild how good 1v1 Magic gameplay used to be. I wish there was a way more newer players could experience it, because it really is a lifechanging gaming experience and its super addicting.

This appears to be different from the LLM "reasoning" we have now, which is more like explanation, and not thoughts. This is more like seeing actual LLM thoughts, or chain-of-thought, which is is presumably much more reliable for research into what is actually going on.

🏆5-0 with Premodern BUG Aluren, inspired by @otb33291187 I might try a 5-color list, since we have to play rainbow lands anyway.

For the first time ever, Denmark's defence intelligence has labeled the USA "a security concern" in its annual assesment of security threats. @jimsciutto asked me how it came to this on CNN this evening.

I wish to remind our allies that NATO was created to defend the West against the Soviet aggression, that is against Russia. And its foundation was solidarity, not egoistic interests. I hope that nothing has changed.

Must read. My summary of the deal is that it's a list of stale Russian demands that would undermine Ukraine and Europe and strengthen Russia's next attack, with some Trumpian corruption sprinkled in.
This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else. theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1…

There is a glaringly obvious message for Europe in the 28 point plan: This is the end of the end. We have been told repeatedly and unambiguously that Ukraine’s security, and therefore Europe’s security, will be Europe’s responsibility. And now it is. Entirely. If you are a European leader asking your team to book you on the next flight to Washington to go talk to Daddy, please don’t. Not without a plan, not cap in hand, not humiliating us all in front of the cameras at the Oval office. Europe is our continent, our future is decided here, not there. We aren’t poor, we have options, we can finally decide to assist Ukraine to the full extent of our very extensive capabilities, restore European dignity and defend Europe. Or we can continue to wait for the miracle we now know is not coming.

FIDE should NOT make this referral at this point. They are deeply tainted. It has to come from the USCF. Tomorrow, the most important people will be at a funeral. This can wait two weeks. As I have already said, FIDE can seek legal advice to begin criminal charges against Kramnik, if they want to show they are serious. What is FIDE's last two actions in this matter? a) This statement: fide.com/fide-statement-on-t… b) Introducing a change to the blitz rating system, aimed specifically at Bortnyk and Naroditsky, specifically because of "farming" accusations by Kramnik. The Ethics Commission will pass judgement based on the complaint they receive. The idea that the people who drafted the statement above think they are the right people to draft this complaint is far worse than Sutovsky putting his foot in his mouth. The last time the FIDE President was involved with the FIDE Ethics Commission, was to get himself out trouble. We cannot allow them to control this matter in politics as usual. @USChess have to urgently inform FIDE that the wrongful actions of a Russian player against an American player, is not something a Russian controlled FIDE Council shall draw up the charges for. This falls to the family, @CLTchesscenter and the USCF.
Human life and dignity are fundamental values shared by all of us. While we hold deep respect and love for the game of chess that unites our community, these values must always come first. In recent times, public debate within the chess world has too often moved beyond the boundaries of acceptable, harming not only people’s reputation but their very well-being. When this happens, discussions can turn into harassment, bullying, and personal attacks — a particularly serious concern in today’s environment. The chess community has long respected the achievements of GM Vladimir Kramnik, and his contributions to our sport are undeniable. The same high standards that accompany great achievements, however, also confer a responsibility to uphold the principles of fairness and respect and to be ambassadors for the sport. Therefore, I, along with the FIDE Management Board, will formally refer all relevant public statements made by GM Vladimir Kramnik — both before and after the tragic death of GM Daniel Naroditsky — to the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission for independent consideration. At the same time, I reaffirm that FIDE will take appropriate action in any case where a lack of respect, public harassment, or bullying is observed within the chess community. We all share responsibility for ensuring that our sport remains a space of integrity, respect, and humanity — values that must always prevail over hostility and division. Arkady Dvorkovich (@advorkovich), FIDE President

Right now in Kyiv, first responders are clearing the rubble of an ordinary residential building after a Russian strike. Another massive attack against our cities and communities. Killings again. Tragically, at least 8 people have already been confirmed dead. One of them is a child. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. People may still be trapped under the rubble. Dozens are wounded. These Russian missiles and attack drones today are a clear response to everyone in the world who, for weeks and months, has been calling for a ceasefire and for real diplomacy. Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table. It chooses to continue killing instead of ending the war. And this means that Russia still does not fear the consequences. Russia still takes advantage of the fact that at least part of the world turns a blind eye to murdered children and seeks excuses for Putin. We expect a reaction from China to what is going on. China has repeatedly called for not expanding the war and for a ceasefire. Yet this is not happening because of Russia. We expect a reaction from Hungary. The death of children should definitely stir far greater emotions than anything else. We expect a response from everyone in the world who has called for peace but now more often stays silent rather than taking principled positions. And it is definitely time for new, tough sanctions against Russia for everything it is doing. All deadlines have already been broken, dozens of opportunities for diplomacy ruined. Russia must feel accountable for every strike, for every day of this war. Eternal memory to all victims of Russia!
