"Flood policy is agricultural policy."
We recently brought together our partners at @IowaFloodCenter and @NEIARCD to talk with @thewaterloop on the benefits of multi-cropping in Northeast Iowa.
Here's more on our pilot project: floodcoalition.org/2023/08/a…
Relay cropping is a promising method farmers use to reduce nutrient runoff into waterways, as demonstrated by @FLOLOfarms.
In Iowa, corn and soybeans dominate, leaving fields bare half the year and increasing nutrient loss.
By growing grains like barley and rye in the same fields, farmers keep the land covered longer, reducing runoff and gaining an additional crop to sell.
Thanks to @floodcoalition, @IowaFloodCenter, and @iowadnr for showcasing this innovative practice.

Barley: ”Oh, hello there! Who are you?”
Pea: ”Hi. I am your new crop companion.”
Barley: “How nice, I always wanted to have a friend.”
Compared to a monoculture, growing two crops in the same field offers various benefits - @jerryalford123 from #TeamLEGUMINOSE explains.

We harvested our second #RelayCrop plot yesterday. The relay #Soybeans brought 57bu/ac and the regular soybeans did 68. Was hoping for no yield difference, but we are again amazed at the profit gains from using a diverse, relay cropping system! #SoilHealth #Harvest22 @MultiIowa

Finished harvest on #RelayCrop plot #1! Brought 32bu rye earlier this summer and now 53bu/ac #Soybeans. Not amazing, but still much more profitable and better #SoilHealth gains than the 65bu/ac check strips of regular beans. #NeededMoreRain #ProfitOverYield 🌱🌱💸

The #RelayCrop soybeans are looking great! We already harvested 30bu/ac #CerealRye off of this plot for this fall’s #CoverCrop seed. It’ll be fun to see how the beans yield this fall. #RegenAg is about getting creative with the #SoilHealth principles. This is one of our methods!
