I don’t think Europeans fully appreciate what is happening to the European Union right now. The EU is under an extraordinary, multi-front assault, both from outside and from within. And I struggle to think of another period in its history when so many powerful actors had an interest in weakening it simultaneously. Russia has spent years waging hybrid warfare against Europe. Weaponised migration, sabotage, cyberattacks, coordinated disinformation campaigns, bot networks and political interference. The objective is clear: undermine trust in democratic institutions, deepen social divisions and weaken European unity. China has different motivations, primarily economic and geopolitical. A fragmented Europe is easier to pressure, easier to negotiate with individually and less capable of defending its economic interests. And then there is the United States. Perhaps the most disturbing development of all. Under Trump and MAGA, a country that helped rebuild the old continent and then spent decades supporting European integration now has an administration openly hostile to much of what the EU represents. Its own National Security Strategy even calls for cultivating resistance to Europe’s current political direction. Think about that for a moment. Meanwhile, within Europe, parts of the far right and far left amplify these divisions, whether through ideological alignment, political opportunism or outright sympathy for authoritarian regimes. This doesn’t mean Russia, China and MAGA are all following some jointly coordinated master plan. They don’t have to. Their interests increasingly overlap, and Europe’s internal divisions make their work considerably easier. What makes this particularly alarming is what is actually at stake. For all its flaws, the EU remains one of the world’s most consequential projects built around liberal democracy, the rule of law, individual freedoms and cooperation between nations. At a time when authoritarianism is gaining ground and even longstanding democracies are showing disturbing tendencies, that matters enormously. Europe is far from perfect. Its bureaucracy, indecision and inability to act decisively are real problems. But the answer cannot be to retreat into 27 competing nation-states, each too small to meaningfully influence a world increasingly dominated by continental powers. Quite the opposite. Europe needs deeper integration, stronger common institutions, genuine strategic autonomy and the political courage to defend its interests and values. Because fragmentation is precisely what so many external actors want. And perhaps that’s the central irony of our time: people are being deliberately manipulated into believing that the reverse is true — that national identity and sovereignty can only be protected by weakening European cooperation. In reality, a divided Europe is less sovereign, less secure and far easier for outside powers to pressure. Therefore the very thing that will make Europe stronger is the thing its adversaries are working hardest to prevent. A united Europe is a geopolitical power. A divided Europe is a collection of countries waiting to be played against one another.

This is what billionaire ownership of the media means: Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta shut down the No Kings account for hours during the height of their protests. Meta suppressed accounts supporting Brazil President Lula da Silva in the recent election. Larry Ellison’s TikTok blocked advertising for a documentary criticizing Elon Musk. Fight back. Defeat oligarchy. Preserve democracy.

Appears to be absolutely MASSIVE protests all across the US yesterday and this platform is so skewed to the Trump/Putin side that this is the first I've seen or heard of it.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The montage uses recycled footage from larger 2025 and March 2026 No Kings protests, not Oct 17 2026 Vote Early events. Those were smaller localized gatherings (hundreds to thousands per city) focused on early voting, not the massive crowds shown. nytimes.com/2026/10/17/us/… abc7ny.com/post/no-kings-… minnesotareformer.com/2026/10/17/hun… npr.org/2026/10/17/nx-…

One of the nice things living in Europe has taught me about academia is the love that goes into local institution building. Hear me out. 👇 In much of the world, academic life involves jumping from one position to the next. The goal is to get to the most prestigious institution you can. And that’s a valid career path. But in some places people are playing a very different game: they have a lifelong commitment to their home institutions and cannot think of working anywhere else. Visiting Pécs reminded me again of the value of institution builders. These are often scholars who could operate elsewhere based on merit but choose not to. The net effect is people who not only contribute a level of teaching and research that would be hard to attract from abroad, but who are active in building their institution, by applying for grants, building programs, and connecting with others. This sits in stark contrast with an experience I still remember from my time at MIT. I remember talking with a famous computational biologist at a party who insisted that there was no point in paying any attention to anyone who had never visited the institute before the age of 35, because if they hadn’t been invited, that was proof they didn’t matter. I disagreed, but I was not at all convincing. But I still stand by my disagreement. Institution builders matter enormously, and I would argue matter more than many of those obsessed with the pyramid scheme of prestige that can emerge from institutional climbing. Great institutions exist because some people choose to stay and build them. Prestige is easy to admire. Institutions are harder to build.

Sehr gute Frage.

The Greek electricity grid currently sits at 91% Renewables, with a smattering of fossil for stability. It’s exporting to five counties. When I moved into the Renewables industry the fossil lobbyists said beyond 20% made the grid unstable.

German journalist posed as a Putin supporter to expose Kremlin agents Journalist Angelique Geray ran a fake channel for several months under the name “Katya” — a Russia supporter. She posted videos featuring the Russian flag and soon received assignments from people who contacted her. She was asked to photograph sites in Germany, monitor people from the CDU, arms companies and NGOs, as well as collect the personal data of their employees. The recruitment of “one-time agents” often begins with simple tasks for small amounts of money. For example, they may be asked to take a photo, pick up a package or obtain a SIM card. The assignments then become more serious. Communication is mainly conducted through Telegram, and each operative knows only their part of the operation. German politician Jovica Jovitch from the pro-Russian Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance reached out to “Katya’s” channel. He gave advice on developing the channel. For example, the politician suggested making a video of “Katya” dancing on a NATO flag. When asked about links to Russian intelligence services, Jovitch replied that theoretically he knew nothing, but practically he did. He later denied having any ties to Russian intelligence. After Geray revealed her fake identity, unknown individuals threatened to kill her.

Hilo:🧵

🇩🇪🇪🇺 Germany is not collapsing. Germany is in crisis only by its own standards. 🔸 Unemployment is 3.8%, versus 5% across the OECD. 🔸 The world’s second-largest trade surplus. 🔸 The lowest debt-to-GDP ratio in the G7. 🔸 Germany hosts 46% of the world’s specialised mid-sized global market leaders. After decades of exceptional performance, Germany faces a temporary crisis exploited by radicals. Germany needs major investment in energy, infrastructure and industry, not what the AfD offers.
