I thought this quote from #Chiang was very powerful and conveys a universal message, "Digital memory will not stop us from telling stories about ourselves. As I said earlier, we are made of stories, and nothing can change that." No digital world can steal our memory #Muddybuddies

@brucestories #Kin is a great take on human empathy. Both the alien and the child empathize with each other while the government official could with neither. Empathy built a relationship that transcended species. We could learn something from that in today's world. #Muddybuddies

Sometimes just putting in the effort to get to know another person's culture is all it takes to bridge the gap between you and them. #muddybuddies

Great one sentence summary/breakdown of Jameson's “Progress versus Utopia; or, Can We Imagine the Future?”
Jameson believes that the ultimate function of science fiction isn't to create a fictional world which we can hope for and envision ourselves in, but rather to create a future world so that we can understand our place in the present world. #muddybuddies

No literally tho. May as well have said "she's ugly, breath stinks, ear-splitting voice, 100% ordinary, bUt I LOve HEr." 101 ways to lose a lover in a minute or less 🙄. #Shakespeare #Mymistresseyesarenothinglikethesun #Muddybuddies

#Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 was hilarious, Shakespeare got more out of pocket with each line and then he tried justifying all the stuff he said by basically saying "If I lied about it, the love would be false" which is really top-tier gaslighting. #muddybuddies

Making Shakespeare relevant!
I thought that Shakespeare wrote this for himself as a joke, but maybe it was written for women. Reading other poems like these, it’s possible that women could have felt inferior to the women described in them, so this is like an early body positivity poem. #muddybuddies

In #Shakespeare's sonnet "My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun", he is making a commentary on the absurdity of idealized love poems and put his own comedic spin on romantic cliches #Muddybuddies

Important to try to remember this as it does feel like we can't fix how much is going wrong around us.

In 'Cream of Wheat,' #LucileClifton shines a spotlight on the derogatory terms within the food industry like Aunt Jemima and Rastus. It's a stark reminder of how these stereotypes have been internalized by Black individuals, leaving them feeling personless.#muddybuddies

I agree with when #Keen writes that if a story is able to make people feel empathy for characters that are very unlike themselves, then it is a great story. This is because it is harder to feel empathy towards people that you view as different. #mudrakpack

One of the first things that stands out to me when reading "The Truth of Fact, The Truth of Feeling" by #TedChiang is that this is a story centered around a philosophical question rather than a plot - To what degree do we fabricate narratives and is that bad? #mudrakpack

A difficult question for me, especially when considering the political events of the last 5 years. I personally value truth, but it is true that we construct the story of ourselves and it won't be accurate, so why is it acceptable to construct our story but not a country's?
Really looking forward to #mudrakpack thoughts and questions regarding the great "The Truth of Fact, The Truth of Feeling" by #TedChiang - I may be posting some questions or thoughts before class today.
Another extra credit opportunity for #mudrakpack. I will be there!
Some extra credit opportunities upcoming for #mudrakpack — this event is actually two - one at 2pm and one at 5:30pm. Both events will count toward ec - you do not need to go to both. shu.edu/arts-sciences/news/p…

It is in the wake of its destruction that NJ has recognized greater need for storm preparedness and has invested in resilient infrastructure. As climate change remains a fundamental threat to people’s homes and livelihoods, we must keep fighting to protect future generations.

The commentary on irrational hate is palpable in "Valedictorian". What humans remain within the Firewall hate those who are different and would rather remain locked in their cage than change. Seeing people like that in the real world is always disappointing. #Jemisin #mudrakpack

"In an Artist’s Studio,” the poem states ''A nameless girl in freshest summer-greens.'' Oof. That one hurt. The artist has literally taken every aspect of her identity (even her name) besides what she looks like #mudrakpack
