Re: NFTs
I've seen the space evolve over the past 5 years and generally see two categories (yes, there can be others but would argue they're not yet broadly held and used yet).
(1) Art, simply and by itself. Pure JPEG and authenticity.
(2) 'PFP' NFTs and the like -- whether it's linked to games, communities, etc., basically everything that's not obviously in category (1).
For (1), it's pure speculation for value accrual and depends largely on the proliferation of the artist. As with most art, few winners and areas where most value accrues.
For (2), holders do expect some tangible benefit here. If you want the community to be WORTH something, the founders/business model must be aligned with the community. If one wins, so to must the other. Positive feedback... a symbiotic relationship. This underlies the potent network effect of the model.
Not much different than holding a traditional asset like a stock, except in this case there's a cultural identity that potentiates loyalty, branding, and community growth.
I could go on here, but, to me it's obvious that if a holder doesn't see the direct link between business model success/profitability and appreciation of their holdings (NFTs, tokens, etc.)... the community will slowly fade and, with it, the value of the project's assets and otherwise strongest believers.
Founders need to be out there confronting this head on and addressing this elephant -- if they don't, consider it a signal they only see NFT holders as one segment of the market they're selling into.
Most NFT projects have slowly drifted away from the ideals mentioned above or simply run out of capital after royalties ceased. Right now is the perfect time to compare how founders and teams are engaging their communities vs. when money was flowing freely (i.e., '21 boom period)... it's amazingly telling, disappointing as it may be.
The reason I remain convicted in @pudgypenguins is at every milestone along the way for the past few years, the team has consistently communicated and found opportunities to ensure penguins ate alongside the team, evolving as the space does... prices will be volatile but if you have any belief in these business models and network effects meaning anything, there really isn't many other bets out there worth making right now.
If you think this is a knock on other projects, it is... this is a competition to blaze a trail in a new digital economy. Communities want to be involved, they want to help build these projects, but they need some sense of ownership beyond a collectible!
Hope your project is bringing you along for the ride and not making you the ride.

DEAR PUDGY PENGUINS COMMUNITY: SORRY
To the $PENGU community, we accidentally posted an unfair (and tbh, illogical) comparison between $TRUMP and $PENGU.
The post was done by our political writers (rather than our crypto team) due to out extensive 24x7 coverage of Trump's token launch.
As soon as I saw the post, I deleted it instantly, but the damage was done with almost 500k impressions.
So let me set the record straight:
Pudgy Penguins isn’t just another NFT collection with a token; it’s flipping the script, blending Web2 and Web3 in ways you haven’t seen before.
It all kicked off with 8,888 NFTs July 2021, expanded to a powerhouse community, and proven utility by successfully launching Pudgy Toys in stores while building a viral web2 presence on social media.
And now, with the PENGU token live on the Solana blockchain, the ecosystem’s been supercharged, unlocking a whole new value-stack for the community.
Comparing $PENGU to a new memecoin is a mistake. Despite Trump’s backing, $TRUMP will need to prove staying power. They need to build a passionate community, and even expand towards utility that goes beyond an exciting narrative.
I’m personally bullish on both, and have been bullish of Pudgy Penguins for years, since having Luca on the show in 2022.
Also, for over 2 years, I’ve used Pudgy Penguins as a leading example of an NFT project successfully building utility.
If you want to take the misplaced tweet and criticize me, that’s fine. A mistake is a mistake. But I hope this post sets the record straight for anyone who hasn’t heard me speak about Pudgy on my shows over the years.

They're going to tell you that you were lucky.
Well, we kind of were... lucky to have been taken over by a true visionary.
But the bet? That was easy AF when Luca took over. He is quite possibly the only founder around here that passionately wants everyone in the pengu community to win... and not stop there... but continue to build a world-renowned cultural asset in an exponentially growing sector. Something you're proud to be a part of and aligned to help grow.
Hope others are taking note as this team laps you over and over again.
Seriously, thank you, @LucaNetz, for all you and the team do.

To every person who’s represented the Pudgy Penguin as their PFP, contributed to building around the IP, and to every member who’s helped create an ecosystem and culture that people are proud to be a part of, I just want to say thank you.
The greatness of the Pudgy Penguin has been predestined since mint, and anybody with a knack for culture and community could see that. Yet, through every narrative possible, they tried to defeat us. Unfortunately for them, Penguins do not fold, and we do not falter.
Our takeover was not a democratic process, but together, we turned our fate around. I believe a Web3 company is defined not by the technology it uses, but by the nature in which you build. I’ve been a strong advocate that to succeed, our team would have to be the muscle to the brain that is constructed around our NFT holders. It’s this hive-mind approach that has been the driving factor in our success and why I believe we are all responsible for where we are today.
Today, the Pudgy Penguins brand is driven around a purpose that has been defined around solving 2 problems:
Problem 1: Web3 has a serious branding/top of the funnel problem.
Problem 2: Web3 has a extreme distribution problem.
Today, I can say confidently, that we are leading the charge in solving these 2 issues and our success in solving these problems has inspired other projects to do the same. You may not see it today, but as I look into the future, I see this snowball effect changing our industry forever.
The Pudgy Penguins' success is not just our success, it’s everyone who believes in Web3s success.
Though the belief around the Penguin has never been stronger, it is important to realize that we are far from where we want to be. We must remain steadfast as we continue our mission to onboard the masses.
The story we’re telling here is the thesis of Web3 personified, and though we’ve helped shepard this story, we are not responsible for it. You are.
I am excited to end this year with some more amazing moments and show the world in 2024 what Penguins can really do.

If you like film
If you love generative art.
Echo, No Resonance
🎭 @andreasrau_eu × @hereandnow_exp
🎟 Mint pass Nov 20th, 5pm GMT, @verse_works
My latest series is, in short, about film, memories, and the magic of the moment.
Here’s an introduction to my thoughts behind it 👇
Echo, No Resonance. Test output, 30 x 40 cm
Andreas Rau, 2023
The magic of the moment
Enabled by technology, we record our lives as never before. Every remotely meaningful moment is turned into a photo or video, and shared on social media. In this abundance of recorded information, moments that don’t receive this kind of permanence gain a special beauty. Moments where the Here and Now is important, and nothing else. For in essence, the beauty of the unrecorded lies in its ability to preserve the sacredness of the moment, the pure power that lies within the ephemeral.
As a jazz musician, I know a thing or two about the magic of the moment and the unique energy of creation that happens in the Here and Now. While you certainly can rehearse, there’s no way to plan for the freedom and creative force that can emerge in these moments.
This same concept is at the very core of generative art: The system may be well-defined, yet you can’t plan for what will emerge from it in the end. It’s this uncertainty that I find fascinating: The infinite space of possible outputs, the energy of the moment and the underlying risk of failure.
Therefore, I was immediately intrigued when @hereandnow_exp approached me about their new concept of live cinema — a movie that would be performed, shot, and displayed in real time, with no way of going back, and with no recording available after its creation. A blend of theatre and cinema of sorts, with a generative series using the film as its input as the only record of the film.
Knowing @hereandnow_exp from their fabulous curation and experiences on Tezos, it was easy to say yes to this collaboration.
Not unlike generative art, live cinema is a risky undertaking, with the potential for unforeseen beauty
Making memories with an algorithm
Using an algorithm to create the only permanent memory of an ephemeral experience sounds like trying to invent a memory making machine — a rather impossible undertaking. And even though computers these days have plenty of memory, and can record down to pixel perfection, the most important quality of our own memories would be lacking from such recordings: meaning.
Our memories aren’t pixel perfect. On the contrary, they are fragmented and distorted versions of reality, tightly connected to our emotions in that very moment, and highly influenced by our biases. And this is what makes them meaningful, after all. We remember moments for how we felt, not for what we saw. Without memories connected to it, any recording — even in the highest fidelity — remains a stale version of the actual moment.
But in the process of making memories, we are constantly applying our emotional filters. As human beings, we have a tendency to remember extraordinary events and forget the ordinary moments that make up the majority of our existence. Often, we fail to see the magic within these seemingly ordinary moments while living through them. Through the eyes of an algorithm, however, all moments are the same — regardless of their immediate emotional significance to us humans.
Unlike us, an algorithm can choose moments at random, and, through this selection, attach meaning to them. And this is exactly what happens in Echo, No Resonance: The algorithm will select random moments from the live film, and turn them into artworks, thus putting ordinary and extraordinary moments side by side in the collection of artworks to be minted.
In this process of creation, the algorithm acts as a metaphor for how our memories are shaped. It transforms the pixels of the film, the raw data that make up a particular moment, into fragmented and distorted versions of this reality. The outcome, similar to our memories, is not an exact representation of what was visible, but rather an alternate view into the same world.
Echo, No Resonance. Test output, 30 x 40 cm
Andreas Rau, 2023
The process the algorithm goes through to create the final artwork is, in its essence, rather simple:
[1] Downscale and reduce the colors of the original image
[2] Train a Markov chain (a simple probabilistic model) on the sequence of visible pixels
[3] Produce images from the model, and assemble slices from these images into the final artwork
In a play with different levels of abstraction, this process is executed to different degrees, yielding familiar yet distorted versions of the image we saw. Sometimes, there will be visible remnants from the original visible in the output. At other times, everything is abstracted into simple shapes, leaving plenty of room for interpretation and, your own memories.
Illustration of the algorithm in Echo, No Resonance
Should you, dear reader, decide to purchase a mint pass for Echo, No Resonance, you will not only get access to streaming the film in the very moment of its creation — a world premiere — but you will also receive an algorithmically created artwork, derived from one particular moment in the film. You will be able to watch the movie together with plenty of other film enthusiasts around the world, and the algorithm will, metaphorically speaking, watch together with you. While you may remember certain events from the film, the algorithm will select random moments and elevate the magic that lies within them.
In this way, I hope that you might start to think differently about the significance, the meaning, of these moments. For there might be magic and beauty hidden in moments where you least expect it. There might be some such moments in the film, but there certainly are plenty of them in your life. You just need to keep your eyes, and your mind, wide open.
