#OWLS - History isn’t just remembered in Seattle—it’s played on the diamond. Yesterday at T-Mobile Park (@TMobilePark), prior to the Mariners (@Mariners) game against Detroit, the field belonged to the champions of Softball Beyond Borders: the Seattle Owls. Fresh off winning the Nike RBI West Regional Championship in Portland, this squad was hosted by Mariners RBI Ambassador George Kirby (@gkirb98) for batting practice and a special pre-game honor.
For the first time in 20 years, a Seattle team is heading to the Nike RBI Softball World Series in Vero Beach, Florida. Led by standout Mariners Hometown Nine scholars Kennedy Fane, Kaitlyn Washington, and Isabella Garcia, the Owls embody equal parts grit, sisterhood, and elite talent.
This victory hits deeper than the scoreline. The team wears the name of the 1938–39 Seattle Owls, a legendary all-Black girls' softball championship team rooted at Garfield High School. When the Mariners made Major League Baseball history by introducing the Seattle Steelheads uniform to their regular season rotation, it sparked a movement. In partnership with the Mariners Care Foundation, Black Heritage Society of Washington State (@BlackHeritageWA), and Nike RBI (@MLBRBI), youth players were outfitted in historic replica jerseys, bridging past and present.
Founded by Bookie Gates, Baseball and Softball Beyond Borders (@BBBInnerCity) has built an incredible pipeline for youth of color, while Major League Baseball’s (@MLB) Nike RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) program creates pathways for players aged 13–18 to shine. Supported wholeheartedly by Mariners Care CEO Nova Newcomer and the local community, the Owls are bringing Northwest softball back to the national stage. Florida, get ready—Seattle is behind these girls all the way!

While we celebrate the Mariners’ (@Mariners) first Steelhead Sunday of the season today, Seattle Central Little League threw an opening day jamboree yesterday at Judkins Park and Playfield, bringing together local little league teams, coaches, and families for a kickoff event and parade.
Among the little league teams were the Seattle Steelheads, the Owls Club, the Indianapolis Clowns, the Rockford Peaches, the Oakland Larks, the Homestead Grays, the Kansas City Monarchs, the Pittsburgh Crawfords, the Brooklyn Royal Giants, and many more.
As we watch the Negro Leagues be honored by both Seattle Central Little League and the Mariners on the same weekend, we are reminded of their legacy and the impact they continue to have on our youth, culture, and history.
Respect the past, own the future. Sundays are for the Steelheads.

Can't wait to be part of this year's HBCU Seattle Series! 🙌
Who’s ready for some HBCU action at T-Mobile Park (@TMobilePark)? The second annual HBCU Seattle Series is returning Sunday, March 8 when the Emerald City’s own Seattle U Redhawks (@SeattleUBase) take on the Jackson State Tigers (@GoJSUTigersBSB). Get ready for the sound, the culture, and the elite athleticism straight from the heart of HBCU baseball.
The three-game series’ undeniable impact of expanding access and opportunity to baseball is formidable, reminding us of the legacy of the 2023 HBCU Swingman Classic. Board President of the community-rooted nonprofit Baseball Beyond Borders (BBB) (@BBBInnerCity) Cemal Ford explained that the Swingman Classic demonstrated a strong demand for HBCU culture and representation in the Northwest, setting the bar high for the electric energy that HBCU baseball could generate in the Emerald City.
Beyond the spirit, the Swingman Classic proved the remarkable strength and interest of the local Black community in baseball. With over 10,000 attendees flooding T-Mobile Park in 2023, the Classic’s overwhelming turnout motivated BBB to create a recurring way to extend its impact, leading to the creation of the annual Seattle Series as a platform for ongoing HBCU representation and access to baseball and softball in the Northwest.
“The HBCU Swingman Classic showed us what is possible, now we carry the legacy forward,” President of BBB Bookie Gates said.
In collaboration between Seattle U (@seattleu), the Seattle Mariners (@Mariners), and BBB, the 2026 HBCU Series’ three-game series will play out as follows:
Games 1 and 2: Friday and Saturday at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.
Game 3 Finale: Sunday, March 8, at T-Mobile Park.
Secure your tickets now at the link in our bio and be part of the legacy.
See you at T-Mobile Park!
