I am once again here to remind you all that nobody says that kids have to love math before we teach them early numeracy skills. Stop doing that with literacy.

Please don't tell me your teaching methods and materials are culturally relevant, inclusive, or liberatory if they produce illiterate children. Just don't.

We used to have public magnet schools that each had a different emphasis. I went to a science and engineering one. Then they got rid of them and now all schools are everything schools. ā€œWe should start a leadership program.ā€ No we shouldn’t, we have way too many programs.

The way black women are underrepresented in the fields of educational specialities is almost depressing. Please let me know where I can find networks of black SLPs, CALTs, and other language interventionists.

Today, a student with severe ADHD told me ā€œYou're a gentle parenting kind of teacher. You correct us and then just…forget all about it. I like that we get 2nd chances from you.ā€ I almost started crying. Because all I want is for children to be treated with dignity and respect.

My average class size this school year is 3 kids. One kid on my roster gets 1:1 dyslexia therapy for an hour every single day. I’m living a dream 🄰🄹

I worked at a failing school & saw how the public school system fails kids. I also worked at an A school & saw how the public school system fails kids. Corrupt ppl will find a way to self preserve even if it’s at the expense of children. I left public ed with no regrets.

Outside of my amazing job as a private school reading specialist, I regularly work with families to make sure they know their rights and how to hold school faculty and staff accountable when it comes to their dyslexic children. It’s hard work. But the kids are worth it.

It’s hard to be happy about this because I know that inflation exists because of school leaders (like the one I used to work for) forcing teachers to coach kids towards benchmark scores by sending home the DIBELS test materials in ā€œpractice bindersā€ for the sake of numbers.
Louisiana students in grades K-3 improved their reading scores by 10 percentage points on the state’s first universal literacy screener. #laed #lagov #lalege ow.ly/bCJz50SxTyl

When I worked in public education it was 8-9 week depending on if you were a new teacher. I work in private education now and we get 12 weeks off for summer. It is amazing. I regularly tell teachers to make the switch to a private school.

When educators say that they don't understand why parents don't believe in or trust the public education system, my response is almost always, "Can you blame them? What evidence do we have to support the idea that it has done right by children?"

Yes!!!! In other words like it has been said before: We can't intervene our way out of a Tier 1 problem.

I respect people who love summer, but I don’t understand them. To me, summer is a thing to be endured, and fall is our reward for making it to the end.

Louisiana gets most things wrong. I hate it here.

I remember teaching 2nd grade math, science, and social studies at a school where about 85% of the kids were reading below grade level. The principal told us that we need develop strategies to make sure they didn't fail the district-wide science and social studies tests. 1/🧵

In May, about 75% of the 2nd graders were set to be retained because they had failed so many tests. We got permission to read the last test to them. We knew that it still wouldn't bring their grades up enough. I left that school w/o an ounce of guilt. Here's why. 4/🧵

Because as a teacher, I knew what I was responsible for and I also knew what was above me. I advocated for the policy to change every single week in PLCs with admin. It didn't change until it was too late but that's not because I was silent. Always do YOUR part. End 🧵
