Too many kids don’t spend enough time at the connected text level. Let’s change that.
💡 Alex Osburn reminds us: “All roads should lead to connected text.”

Just a reminder...it is not just teachers who need to be trained in the science of reading. Educational leaders and ed board members need or should, at a minimum, have a working understanding of what evidence-based reading instructional practices are.
Why?
Because balanced literacy is entrenched in the American educational system, and all habits die hard.
Plus, teaching is already a hard and exhausting enough job, and when you add to that the act of "constantly swimming against the stream", it often leads to teacher burnout and misunderstandings.
Yes, teachers can be agents of change in their districts, but the change that happens when individual teachers start to speak up tends to move slowly through the system, and while it happens, many children are left behind, and that is too high of price to pay for our vulnerable learners.

📚 “When what you read is meaningful, you are more likely to read again.”

I was just having a conversation about this with a colleague! I’m so tired of seeing this as a recommendation, especially for MLs, and most especially for our vulnerable MLs who are SIFE(students with interrupted formal education) who are learning to read for the first time!

SoRticle #18: Developmental Language Disorder: Syntactic Processing Difficulties are a Key Factor
If you are not familiar with the work of Dr. Tiffany Hogan, you are missing out on a very important piece of the reading puzzle. As the Simple View of Reading Model (Gough & Tunmer, 1986) illustrates, reading comprehension is the product of decoding and language comprehension. So why don’t we screen for risk of language comprehension difficulties the same way we screen for risk of word reading difficulties?
In Ontario Canada, we are mandated to screen for risk of word reading/decoding difficulties, which is half of the SVR model. But teachers rarely screen for risk of Language Comprehension difficulties, the other half of the SVR model. If students have difficulty understanding language, they will inevitably have difficulty understanding what they read.
And as rely more heavily on Assistive Technology for students with reading difficulties, we have to remember that text-to-speech and other reading software that is commonly purchased by school districts will not help a child with DLD!!! Google speech-to-text may support students with decoding difficulties but it will not help a student who lacks syntactical awareness and lacks the vocabulary to understand what is read to them.
This is a must read article from International Dyslexia Association: dyslexialibrary.org/perspect…
