FAIR has filed a federal complaint with @NEAarts against Maestra Music to challenge their apprenticeship program, which was 𝗳𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 by NEA through @NYSCArts, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝘅 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲. The program was created with MUSE in collaboration with the Broadway production of Wicked.
FAIR in the Arts member Kevin Lynch, a white man, was blocked from applying because Maestra restricted membership to only women & nonbinary individuals, and MUSE only accepted people of color. Coming just after a unanimous Supreme Court ruling affirming that majority-group plaintiffs are equally protected under federal law, Maestra’s policies violated Titles VI & VII of the Civil Rights Act.
Arts should unite us, not divide us. Public funds must serve everyone regardless of race or gender. Equal opportunity must be for all, not just for some. /1
