An evangelical megachurch in California has agreed to pay $12 million to settle a civil sexual abuse lawsuit involving allegations that one of their leaders brutally battered and raped a woman 12 times.
The lawsuit against Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa was filed by a former employee. The $12 million agreement was reached outside of court, which suggests that the megachurch was willing to pay a hefty sum to stop the specific details from being exposed in court, and to avoid any admission of wrongdoing.
Before joining the church, Jacob Harman, 51, had been charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The lawsuit alleges that Harman's then-wife had even warned the senior pastor about his "sexual violence" and other serious red flags, but the church took no actions to investigate these claims.
According to the lawsuit, Harmon's victim was afraid to report the assaults because she's a single mom who depended on her employment at the school on the church's campus and the free tuition her children received.
She also says Harman told her that he would use his influence to get her fired if she reported him, and that he threatened to ruin her reputation.
Harman has still not been criminally charged.

Capital won't surrender quietly. As imperial decline deepens, the ruling class will intensify exploitation, repression and war to preserve its power. We've no guarantee of a better future. Organize, educate and build now—or bear the escalating cost of capital's crisis. #ClassWar

She had just got home from work and was changing out of her clothes when twelve officers broke her door down.
She stood there naked, handcuffed, in front of them, telling them over and over that they had the wrong home.
By the count on their own body cameras, she said it more than forty times.
Anjanette Young. Chicago, February 2019. A social worker.
They had raided the wrong apartment on an informant's bad tip. The man they wanted lived next door and was already wearing an electronic monitor — which the city could have checked in about a minute.
Chicago's own accountability office found she was left handcuffed and naked for nearly ten minutes before anyone covered her properly, and handcuffed for about seventeen minutes in total.
Then the city fought for nearly two years to stop her from getting the video — and went to court to try to block a station from airing it.

10 years ago, David Levin went to jail for launching a cyberattack on Florida’s election database.
It appears that the Trump Administration just hired him to monitor elections.
I want to know why.
