Central banks across Asia are intervening in currency markets. But intervention buys time, it does not fix the problem. Selling dollars can slow a currency's decline. It can punish speculators for a day or two. It can make officials look decisive on the evening news. What it cannot do is create new dollar capacity, lower an energy import bill, erase a trade deficit, or stop companies from needing more dollars next week and next month. The half-life of these interventions shrinks precisely when the dollar shock is real. And when oil stays high, the pressure compounds daily, because physical trade demand for dollars never stops. The deeper risk is contagion. A currency crisis in India does not stay in India. Indonesia's stress does not stay in Indonesia. We are already seeing volatility spill into equity markets across South Korea, Japan, and beyond. History is consistent on this point. From the 2013 taper tantrum to Euro Dollar Three, disorderly currency moves rarely stay contained. When the eurodollar system tightens, the strain spreads, and it spreads fast. Gold does not fix a dollar funding crisis. But it does not depend on one either.

The dollar goes up when global dollar funding tightens. That happens when banks and dealers pull back their balance sheets. That is the big one. Volatility rises. Collateral gets more expensive. Swap markets strain. Repo gets harder. Central banks start selling reserves. Risk appetite falls, and borrowers scramble for dollars. The dollar goes down when all of that relaxes. Funding calms. Volatility fades. Dealers expand balance sheets again. The pressure on foreign currencies eases, money flows improve, investors move back into risk, and the urgent demand for dollars dies down. Rates matter. Geopolitics matter. Trade matters. But the one factor that overrides them all is Eurodollar liquidity. So next time someone says the dollar is rising and America must be strong, be careful. A rising dollar means the opposite. Global liquidity is tightening, foreign central banks are defending their currencies, and the offshore dollar system is under pressure. And next time someone says the dollar is falling so the dollar must be dying, be just as careful. A falling dollar means the shortage premium is fading. The system is getting a reprieve. If it keeps falling, that is a good thing. The dollar is not a morality play. It is not a vote on America. It is not the Fed, money printing, or some petrodollar collapse. It is mechanical. Balance sheets and funding. Collateral and swaps. Repo and dealer balance sheets. It is the Eurodollar system. Once you see that, it all makes sense. The dollar goes up when the world is forced to chase it, and down when the chase relaxes.

China's housing market has fallen for 12 straight months. Not stabilizing. Not recovering. Falling. 11% down in 3 years. In the US, wealth is stocks and retirement accounts. In China, it's the house. The savings account. The retirement plan. The collateral for everything. When that loses value month after month after month. People stop spending. Stop borrowing. Stop believing. Household loans just hit a record contraction. The Chinese consumer isn't in recovery mode. They're bracing for worse.
