Huge numbers of geese at the Eden estuary by St Andrews, Fife. What a glorious sight. Hundreds of thousands of migratory geese arrive in Scotland each autumn from the Arctic, Iceland, Greenland and Norway. And they don’t need a taxpayer funded hotel to accommodate them.

Today in The Times I’ve spoken about something deeply personal. In 2018 my brother Tariq took his own life. He never told anyone, not his closest family and friends, what he was going through. Looking back, we believe stigma was a large part of it. He isn’t alone. More than 7,000 people die by suicide every year in the UK, and over 70% were not in contact with the mental health services that might have saved them. It remains one of the biggest killers of young people. I’m supporting this campaign because of Philip Pirie, who lost his son Tom in 2020 and has since rallied experts and politicians around the country to push for change. When he approached me, I was very happy to join forces with him. Together we’re calling – alongside psychiatrists, charities and MPs from across the political spectrum – for a national public health campaign to reduce the stigma around suicidal thoughts and encourage more people to reach out for help. Public health campaigns work: we’ve seen it with drink-driving and HIV/AIDS. And the evidence suggests this one would more than pay for itself. Every life saved spares a family unimaginable grief and the country real cost. Giving people permission to speak saves lives. If you’re struggling, or worried about someone who is, the Samaritans are there free, day or night, on 116 123. thetimes.com/article/11bef78…

EXCLUSIVE: Andy Burnham has been warned by a senior ally that increasing taxes on wealth in the budget would be “stupid” because it would encourage entrepreneurs to leave the country and damage economic growth The prime minister spent more than a month attempting to convince Lord O’Neill of Gatley to join his government as either a minister or an economic adviser, but was unable to do so In an interview with The Times, O’Neill said that if the government raised taxes in the budget on October 28 it would demonstrate that ministers were not “thinking about growth as sincerely as they claim they are” He said it would also show that they were being “scared and lazy and constrained” in failing to take on “sacred cows” such as the pension triple lock and welfare reform I do think it would be stupid,” he said. “At a time where a lot of business still struggles from Brexit and struggles from the changes in national insurance and the Labour market changes to zero hours — to have that and inheritance tax, it’s just like it would be yet more, and obviously at a time where the country’s growth rate has been so weak.” He added: “I think there is some evidence that if you push it up too much you end up losing money. Because it’s such a deterrent to ongoing activities of business owners that they just don’t sell anything. So the revenues go down. “I am myself somebody that’s now had close to 20 years’ experience as a venture capital investor and it’s hugely risky. The thing that Andy’s done so well is create this spirit of ‘I’m going to be a happier kind of positive person’. It’s against that.” He argued that unless there was a significant increase in public spending there was no justification for tax rises at all. “I don’t get why they would raise tax,” he said. “Because all that’s telling you is that they’re not thinking about growth as sincerely as they claim they are. They’re just being scared and lazy and constrained in dealing with the sacred cows.” thetimes.com/article/6b88555…

I didn’t know PC Andrew Harper. But the night he died, we were working the same shift, in different locations, in different forces, doing the same job; emergency response. He made a choice I couldn’t. He was on the way back in for handover and he took the last emergency call, like so many of us have. I couldn’t, I had a prisoner on board. When I got home, I read what had happened. The best of us, taken, just for doing his job. That’s why you get this to One Million. Thank you. #ThinBlueLine 🚨

Andy Burnham has shamefully decided to let out two of PC Andrew Harper’s killers early PC Harper’s widow has decide this as a “betrayal” She’s right. These criminals who killed a police officer should not be let out of jail early. They shoud stay in prison. Andy Burnham has badly let down Andrew’s family but also let down the police officers up and down the country who take risks every day to keep us safe. Burnham has got this wrong, and should think again

Scotland has just done something quietly brilliant for its birds 🐦 New buildings across the country will now have to include "swift bricks", hollow bricks built straight into the walls that give birds a safe place to nest. It sounds like a small thing but it isn't. Swift numbers in the UK have fallen by around 60% since the mid-1990s, and one of the biggest reasons is heartbreakingly simple: modern buildings have nowhere for them to go. Swifts have always nested in the nooks and gaps of our houses, and as those disappeared, so did they. The birds themselves make it worse by being loyal to a fault. Swifts return to the exact same nest site year after year, having flown thousands of miles from Africa to get there. When they arrive to find it sealed up, some will keep flying at the spot again and again, sometimes injuring themselves in the process. The bricks cost about £30 each. They need no maintenance, they don't affect insulation, and once they're in the wall, you'd never know they were there. Sparrows, starlings and house martins use them too, all species in trouble for the same reason. One RSPB conservationist put it starkly. In his part of Glasgow, not a single swift bred in 2025, the first time in his 30 years there. He called it "nothing short of heartbreaking." Scotland is the first country in the UK to write this into law. Campaigners are now hoping the rest follows.

Some of the 55,000 tennis balls used during Wimbledon are upcycled into tiny homes for harvest mice. After the tournament, the used tennis balls, made of rubber and felt, are collected and transformed into cozy shelters by organizations like the British Wildlife Centre.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Although some Wimbledon tennis balls were turned into homes for harvest mice in the early 2000s this is no longer the case. The tournament now sells most used balls to spectators with proceeds benefiting the Wimbledon Foundation. snopes.com/fact-check/har… news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/1…
