39 years ago tonight, I still remember, living in Kent as child, waking up in the middle of the night wondering what the roar was outside, which got louder and louder with things crashing around outside in the dark, the lights going out. 2 days without electricity in our village followed, cooked on a gas stove and ate by candlelight. No school for a few days too.

We are so sad to report the death of another police officer.
PC Alex Ayre died on Friday morning after being hit by a train near Branksome. He was just 24 years old.
His family have paid a heartbreaking tribute, describing Alex as a much-loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin and best friend who was “the life and soul of the party” and could make absolutely anyone laugh.
They said:
“Alex, forever 24.
None of us ever imagined we would be having to say goodbye to you so soon. Losing you has left a space in our lives that can never be filled.
You were a much-loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin and best friend. You were deeply loved and respected by your family, friends, colleagues and so many people whose lives you crossed along the way.
You were the life and soul of the party, the cheeky one who could make absolutely anyone laugh. You brought so much laughter, warmth and personality wherever you went.
24 years will never feel like enough, but you filled those years with so much love, laughter and friendship.
Forever our son. Forever our grandson. Forever our brother. Forever our nephew. Forever our cousin. Forever our Alex.”

25 years after the attacks, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush stood at Ground Zero and honored the 2,977 people murdered that day. The sitting president of the United States could not be bothered.
The New York ceremony does not allow political speeches. It is for the dead. That was a deal-breaker. So Trump went to the Pentagon, where he could grab a microphone and turn remembrance into a performance.
Four former presidents showed up for the victims. Trump only shows up for Trump.

If you were young in 2001, or weren’t even born yet, it can be hard to imagine what 9/11 felt like. The shock of that beautiful, cloudless morning. The heartbreak of the families whose loved ones were taken with such swiftness and cruelty. The realization that the forces of malevolence and violence were closer, and the future less certain, than we knew.
But in the days that followed, we felt something else, too. Pride in the rescue workers who had rushed to the scene, and the passengers who had stormed the cockpit. Admiration for the men and women who left behind lives of comfort to serve their country. A deep resolve that nothing would break the will of a truly United States of America.
Today Michelle and I are remembering those we lost that day, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the wars that followed. We pray for their families. And we hope Americans everywhere remember the true lesson of 9/11: that we can survive even our darkest days as long as we move forward as one nation and one people.

On September 11 2001, two F-16 pilots took off from Andrews Air Force Base knowing their mission could end with them deliberately crashing their own fighters into a hijacked passenger jet.
Lt. Col. Marc Sasseville and 1st Lt. Heather “Lucky” Penney were scrambled as the attacks unfolded and United Airlines Flight 93 was believed to be heading toward Washington. There was one enormous problem: their F-16s had no live missiles aboard. There simply wasn’t time to arm them before launching.
So the two pilots devised an extraordinary last-resort plan.
Sasseville would ram Flight 93’s cockpit. Penney would strike the tail, destroying the aircraft’s ability to remain airborne.
“I’m going to go for the cockpit,” Sasseville told her.
“I’ll take the tail,” Penney replied.
Both understood what that could mean. Penney later described it as potentially a one-way mission.
They raced toward Washington and searched for the missing airliner, unaware that the passengers and crew aboard Flight 93 had already fought back against the hijackers. The Boeing 757 had crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, before the fighters were airborne.
Penney would later insist that the real heroes that morning were the people aboard Flight 93.
They had done what the two fighter pilots were preparing to sacrifice their own lives to do: stop the aircraft from reaching Washington.

The wife of PC Matthew Blades, one of our officers who was sadly killed in the collision on the A66 in the early hours of Saturday 22 August 2026, has paid the following tribute to him:
"No words will ever feel like the right words to honour our Matt — my beloved husband, my best friend, and the most devoted father to our two young boys.
"He was an adored son and brother, a perfect son-in-law, and the most fun uncle. He was loved beyond words by all his family and friends, and his loss has left a space that can never be filled.
"He gave his life in the line of duty, protecting and serving others with courage, dedication and selflessness.
"The pain of losing him is beyond words, and our lives will never be the same. Neither will the love he gave us ever fade.
"Our children will grow up knowing what an incredible father he was and will always be, and I will carry his love, his memory and everything we shared with me always.
