Students see graphs everywhere. Do they know how to question them? 📊
Oct 22: I'm hosting an @NCTM webinar, "Beyond the Graph: Building Data Literacy Through Classroom Routines."
Routines + real data for everyday math class.

The best warm-up I know takes 5 minutes and has no wrong answers.
Look silently for a minute
What do you notice?
What do you wonder?
What math questions could we ask?

4/ Your turn 🧮
Which decade had the most empty years?
What percent of years went without a prize?
Reply with your answer AND how you figured it out. Bonus: what would you want your students to notice first?

What do you notice? What do you wonder? 👀
Here is a great notice/wonder activity for your students. What Can 126 Dots Tell Us About Peace?. Look at all 3 images for the slow reveal.
If you could measure peace using only 3 numbers, what data would you want to know?

We don't always have to rely on "two negatives make a positive" when subtracting a negative.
3/ The reveal: it's the Nobel Peace Prize, 1901–2026 🕊️
🟡 107 years a prize was awarded
⚪ 19 years with no prize
9 of the 19 empty years fall during the two World Wars. The 2026 prize went to Navi Pillay, South African jurist, for her work for peace and international law.
2/ Here's a clue 🔍
Each dot is one year, starting with 1901. The circled dot is 2026.
So what could the EMPTY dots mean? Why would some years be blank, and why do they bunch up in certain decades?
Make a guess before you scroll 👇

The @Brewers sweep the Dogers 4-0 and clinched a spot in the World Series last night. If the chances of winning were a coin flip (50/50), how likely is a 4–0 sweep?
Let me know in the comments. Solution posted later. #WorldSeries #Brewers @MLB

The best PD session I facilitated this summer started with teachers doing the math, not hearing about it. @Amplify
What's the best PD moment you've had this fall? Let me know below 👇 #MathEd #ProfessionalDevelopment
Three months as an Amplify Desmos Math facilitator taught me one thing about teacher PD:
Teachers learn math teaching by doing the math, not by hearing about it.
The sessions that land aren't the ones with the best slides. They're the ones where teachers work a task together, get stuck, argue a little, and then see what their students will experience.
If I could tell every new facilitator one thing, it would be this: talk less, and let the math do the work.
What's the best PD you've ever had, and what made it work?

AI can do your students’ math homework. It can’t tell them how many times they checked their phone today. 📱
Only students have that data.

Today is the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month. Our classrooms are richer for the languages, stories and ways of thinking Hispanic and Latino students and families bring. Every student deserves to see themselves in what they learn. The month ends; the celebrating doesn’t. 💛 #HispanicHeritageMonth
Students ask "Who does math?" more often than we think.
Lathisms highlights a Latinx or Hispanic mathematician every day of Hispanic Heritage Month. Students pick one and share what surprised them.
Who's a mathematician you introduce to your class?
