Sounds like Kobe would have made a great Math Teacher! #MTBoS
“As a coach my responsibility is to teach them how to fish. Give them the fundamentals, teach them how to think and then we they go play. They have to be able to problem solve. It’s having the patience to allow them to think independently and make mistakes,” Kobe Bryant

Things like this set apart great teaching from good teaching.
Replying to @pwharris
Yes!
And I'll go further: have students show fractions on grid paper. This will lead to useful conversations, and end up being a great tool for comparison and operations. I'll present "the well-chosen rectangle" at @CAMathCouncil (Asilomar) in December

"Building #thinkingclassrooms is a problem to solve, not a formula to master.
The framework gives ideas, not a choreographed dance to follow.
The best tool to solve the problem is recursion - find your efficiency and scale it up."

Math is about pattern finding
#MP7
Instead of telling students the patterns (formulas) help them to discover the patterns.
Nice to see good programs bring in great minds and watch them mesh!

"We weren't so much teaching students to think; we were liberating them to think. They already had it in them."

Traditional Grading: Students learn what the teacher values.
Standard-Based Grading: Students learn the curriculum.
Students need enjoyable practice in phase 2(using strategies) in order to get to phase 3(automaticity). The best is that Phase 3 just happens over time. #iteachmath #mtbos
