Teaching elapsed time to primary school students can be challenging. Here’s a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) I developed using student work samples and insights from student conferences. Enjoy!

The mother of the 6-year-old who shot his teacher and then told cops, "f*ck you... b*tch," blamed the incident on his ADHD.
During an interview following the shooting, the boy's mother, Deja Taylor, said he had a "disability."
"He has ADHD... he doesn't sit still ever."
In the interview, Turner also appeared to point blame at the teacher for suspending her child, claiming he "accidentally" knocked her phone out of her hand.
The teacher, Abigail Zwerner, suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and chest. She needed multiple surgeries and spent weeks in the hospital.
I'm not a doctor, but I don't think ADHD makes you shoot your teacher.
Did anyone feel that earthquake just then? It’s 2:00am and that felt strong! #earthquake
Using numberless models is a great way to help students understand the inverse relationship between operations.
Enjoy!

The easiest way I’ve found to help students move from reading 4-digit to 7-digit numbers is to break the number into “carriages” and use the mnemonic of a train.

In one of the final editions of APMC, I wrote ‘Four Questions Before Going Vertical’. With renewed discussion about the vertical method for addition, it feels timely to share. I’m not against the method, I simply ask: when should we teach it? drive.google.com/file/d/1o00…

Unpopular opinion:
One reason teachers are driven out of the profession is the unrealistic, and sometimes fanciful, expectations pushed by educational “experts.”
It’s easy to promote beautiful theories about students, instruction, and classroom management when you don’t have to actually put those theories to practice every day.
The reality is that many teachers are doing an incredible job given the circumstances they’ve been handed.
And too often, they never hear that from the very people whose support, encouragement, and recognition they need most.

Not so fun fact:
In 2017….31% of teachers considered leaving the profession due to student behavior.
Today, that number is 60%…nearly double!
Will this ever get better?
I’ve long held a mission to help democratise maths education for primary-aged students.
No matter where a child lives, their family income, cultural background or home life, every child should have the opportunity to learn maths.

I’m working on a new video exploring how number lines can help develop proportional reasoning through scale.
We often teach students to locate and order numbers, but don’t always extend this to noticing relationships across different scales.

One of the biggest challenges with decimals is helping students visualise how each place value position becomes 10 times smaller as we move to the right.

The “longer is larger” misconception is common when learning decimals. Students often think 0.125 > 0.7 because it has more digits. This video aims to iron out this misconception using a decimat. Enjoy!

A decimat is one of the best tools for building decimal understanding. Instead of telling students that 0.2 = 2 tenths, let them see it. Enjoy!
