Please support multiplicative thinking.
"It is important to support students in realizing that the amount 126 is not just 1 hundred, 2 tens and 6 ones. It is also 12 tens plus 6 ones."

For more mindful media engagement, consider this moment as an opportunity to pause, reflect, and reimagine your relationship with screens. Here are four recommendations to move from restriction-focused to a more integrated approach. gse.harvard.edu/news/uk/21/0…

1. Recognize you have biases
2. Evaluate them critically
3. Challenge assumptions and traditions
Sketchnote by @tnvora based on work by @SmitaTharoor

ALT Sketch note text: Unconscious Bias. What is it? It's instinctively categorizing people and things without being aware of it. A flaw in thinking guided by past experiences and mental preconditioning. Did you know there are 150 types of biases? And they impact us, our work and our relationships. How to deal with your biases? 1. Know them well. Read about them, recognize they exist. Be mindful in your words and actions. 2. Think critically. Attend to data and evidences. Look at problems as a diamond with multiple facets and not asa coin with only two sides. 3. Challenge assumptions and traditions. Take a contrary view. Ask why and why not often? Embrace diversity. Practice empathy.

M ups, add 1. How fast does your amount grow? Start with a whole cup, M up, munch away. How many rolls until they’re all gone? What would happen if we had 4 sided M&Ms? Mmmm!

I'm occasionally asked (bit.ly/35O9uVJ) what's the worst science-violating movie ever. My answer was Disney’s "The Black Hole" (1979) — until “Armageddon" (1998) came along, which violated more laws of physics (per minute) than any other film in the universe.

Total fun! 6th grade scientists assemble their own Alpha and complete test flights. So far, max flight was about 1:20 mins. Planes are rubber band powered with scaled control surfaces. The 4 flight forces, studied last week, are put into action. Modifications being discussed!

Engaging primary sources is the fundamental work of historians. Lower School Historians are grappling with fundamental, mysterious (what does the snake mean? why is it cut into pieces?) documents that make for genuine historical research. This is passion for lifelong learning!

Ms. Lin, our SU intern, did some calculus to check our calculations and found an error. Everyone was furiously doing the math and they found the mistake. Great effort for the last 10 minutes of last block!

Just a few students in Pre-Calculus today because of class trips. They explored patterns for multiplying and even came up with a formula: 999...x999...(n times) = (10^(2n)-(2x10^n-1). WOW!!! Plus a few other patterns, too.
