Despite being a cooler night with clear spells and fog towards dawn, there was a significant upturn in species and numbers here in St. Mellion, Cornwall, with 214 moths of 73 species recorded. New for the year - Garden Pebble (E. forficalis), 4 Scorched Wing and Light Arches.

3 new species for the year tip me over the 300 mark for 2024. 2 Broad-barred Whites were fantastic, never had 2 before in one night, even better was a cracking Marbled Coronet. Cloaked Minor was the 3rd new one. A really odd Dark Arches was nice also. Fordham, East Cambs

Why moths are textbook examples of natural selection
A new paper in @EvolLetters shows birds actively prey on invasive box tree moths, with white morph moths hunted more often. Along with other forces, predation influences the ratios of color forms in natural habitats. doi.org/10.1093/evlett/qrad0…

Sound the alarm! 🐛🔊🚨
Did you know some caterpillar whistle by forcing air out their abdominal spiracles?
The sound may not seem that frightening or loud to us, but it has been known to startle predators away!
