Research by @scope shows that too many disabled people aren’t receiving the support they’re entitled to from employers to stay in work. I’ve written in @LabourList about the need for a national strategy to close the disability employment gap.

Yet another story about mishandling and marking your own homework. Yet another predator praised and victims disbelieved. And…yet another reason to support #PE1979 to establish the empowering and ongoing space of an independent national whistleblowing office for education and children’s services, where cases of mishandling can be directly and independently investigated. Yesterday, @PhilipDoggart raised the implementation of our son Joseph’s independent safeguarding review directly with the Council Leader at full Council. His question was simple: when a serious safeguarding review involving a child makes recommendations, should those recommendations be implemented promptly, and what happens when they are not? The Council Leader’s answer was equally clear. Recommendations should be implemented “as fast as possible.” Officers have “a responsibility and a duty” to make sure that happens. So why are we still asking? Joseph’s independent safeguarding review has been complete since January. In April, the Council told us work on the recommendations was already underway. It is now September and we are still trying to obtain the most basic evidence of implementation: What has actually been done? What remains outstanding? Who is responsible for each recommendation? What are the completion dates? Where is the action plan? The agreed Terms of Reference required a clear action plan. The final report we eventually received still ends with: “Action Plan To be determined.” This is not some minor administrative exercise. The independent review identified serious failures in how safeguarding and child-protection concerns involving our five-year-old son were handled. It found that allegations which should have triggered child-protection consideration were not dealt with through the appropriate procedures. Recommendations arising from findings like these cannot simply sit in a report for months while a family repeatedly asks what has happened to them. A safeguarding review only protects other children if its findings actually lead to change. Eight months after the review was completed, we should not have to fight for evidence that this has happened. Thank you to @PhilipDoggart for putting this question on the public record. The question for @Edinburgh_CC remains incredibly simple: What has actually been implemented since January, and why is it proving so difficult to tell us? – at Straiton, Scotland

This should be much bigger than it is. PE1979 is not about one type of abuse, one setting or one group of children. It is about whether every child in Scotland can be properly protected when serious safeguarding concerns are raised and whether there is somewhere genuinely independent for families, survivors and whistleblowers to turn when public bodies fail. That protects every single one of our kids. Every parent, grandparent, carer and anyone who cares about children’s safety should be paying attention to this petition and supporting it. Four years is already far too long. We cannot allow this to drag on for another four while government continues to deliberate and discuss. Children continue to be at risk while the system remains inadequate. Please read Alison’s post, follow #PE1979, share it and ask your MSP what they are doing to strengthen independent safeguarding and accountability in Scotland. This affects all of us. – at Straiton, Scotland
Today, the Public Petitions Committee supported #PE1979 by keeping it open and agreeing actions to progress our petition’s calls. In the words of the committee’s #MSPs “I would ask that we keep the petition open, write to Alexis Jay and see if we can facilitate a meeting with the petitioners and Professor Jay.” Marie McNair MSP “Absolutely, to remain open. There could be a direct link with the grooming gangs scandal. Very serious issues, so absolutely 100% remain open and refer it to the relevant bodies.” Julie MacDougall MSP We were also grateful to @MeghanSCUP for taking the time to attend committee and speak in support of the petition. Meghan asked the committee to clarify with the SG that whistleblowing will be included in Phase 11 of the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry (SCAI). Whilst petitioners welcome a meeting with Prof Jay, we continue to highlight that the diverse cases behind the petition’s calls, which allege the mishandling of child abuse concerns by public bodies, include but are not limited to, the Group Based #CSA #CSE Inquiry. Petitioners also welcome consideration of #whistleblowing within Phase 11 of the SCAI and importantly, greater recognition around the breadth of whistleblowing voices. This has included survivors, families and carers, former and current staff and others. However, we'd also again highlight that the allegations behind the petition are wider than the SCAI’s care focus and that they include all children and young people’s settings across Scotland. It's also important to note that the allegations have included concerns around the SCAI itself. This includes the failure to support the inclusion of all voices, limited truth about the abuse, and what feels to be a lack of convictions or the level of justice and accountability that survivors and whistleblowers want to see. In the way forward, petitioners would call on MSPs to better understand the need to independently investigate the actual cases, especially where the alleged perpetrators still work with or have access to children and young people. This is the crux of the petition and vital in establishing the fullest child safeguarding truth to best protect children. Hence why the petition calls for the empowering and ongoing space of an independent national whistleblowing office for education and children’s services. #childsafeguarding #childrensrights

Fantastic news. #PE1979 stays open and moves forward. Families and survivors have spent years showing why the current safeguarding and accountability systems are not enough. Today, Parliament chose to keep listening. A really important step. Now the pressure must continue until meaningful change follows.
This morning, the new Public Petitions Committee agreed to keep open and support the progress of #PE1979 More to follow later.

Today in Scotland a woman is so afraid in her own home she fears being killed by the man who tells her he loves her. Crime figures show she might not make it to tomorrow.Today dozens of women will be raped and carry the trauma for the rest of their lives. Today hundreds of children will cower as their mothers become another domestic abuse statistic. If they survive, they will carry the psychological scars forever. It does not have to be this way. We can all do something right now to end this. Stand with us and say It’s Time…..share and repost if you support us
