Just on the heels of another DMA-induced delay, the reintro of the U.S. version (AICOA) is bad news.
Just like DMA, AICOA would degrade the integrated svcs small biz prefer & increase distro costs for startups:

Small Business Developers Support POPA
POPA puts parents in control of their kids’ sensitive personal data instead of forcing them to give it up to Meta.

Big Tech Group Jumps The Gun On Unreleased Bill, Raising Questions About Cozy Ties With Lawmakers: An Apple-backed trade group on April 12th prematurely published a press release this week praising a yet-to-be-introduced Senate bill, raising questions… dlvr.it/TS9bMV
This is metastasizing into the issue we had post 1998 when software patentability resurfaced. If we undo reviews and backstops, there'll be a flood of patent litigation for patents that should've been reexamined & possibly rejected. We want high quality patents, not random slop.
Patent owners and innovators are urging the White House to reconsider the USPTO’s proposed IPR rule, warning it could insulate invalid patents and raise costs for American businesses.
Strong innovation requires fair, predictable patent review.

I have always loved a good semicolon!
There’s this never-ending debate about whether em dashes, semicolons, and colons have become signs of AI writing. As a result, many of us writers have stopped using them—swapping them for commas or reshaping sharp, effective sentences into something blander—to avoid suspicion.
But AI was trained on the best of us. On millions of published works by real authors. It learned from our voices, our rhythms, our punctuation. And now we’re acting as if those marks somehow belong to machines.
They don’t.
Those tools were ours long before AI existed. Our teachers taught us how and when to use them, years before anyone imagined generative AI. So let’s take them back. Let’s use the full range of language with confidence. The em dash, the semicolon, the colon—they’re not signals of artificiality. They’re signs of craft.

I strongly support patents and the value they can have to small developers, but the PTAB changes will expose our industry to the worst possible outcome - overbroad patents being enforced against small businesses that have just enough money to pay, but not enough money to fight.
We've all seen the news stories about the various changes that the Trump Administration has brought to Washington, but activity at @USPTO's has flown under the radar for many.
Recently, App Association President @Morganwreed sat down with @mlexclusive to discuss the latest developments at USPTO, saying that changes, specifically to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, will make the patent process "more difficult for small businesses."
here at @hhs listening session Valdes @icanbwell hitting a point that @Jointherimidi Dr. Ide has been pointing out for years, until we start enforcing introp laws, you will not get the sharing that is needed. not new laws, just enforcing the laws on the books!
Valdes @icanbwell talking about the difficulty of scheduling appointments and how high the rate of scheduling abandonment is, primarily caused by all the hoops people have to jump through. Need to use better, more UX oriented approach especially around use of biometrics for ID
Kristen Valdes @icanbwell and Kyna Fong @ElationHealth talking about standards-based and proprietary APIs, “how do you create the interfaces”that work across 2000+ different EHRs in use. Key tasks like scheduling an appointment change across systems.
Lisa Ard, @ChenMed talking about AI for disease management “turns out there are 7 chronic conditions that end up being multiplicative on cost” we need to use AI to “help manage these conditions faster” to improve outcomes and manage cost.
More from Amy Gleason @ThePatientsSide at the HHS/CMS listening session “we aren’t here to continue the interop discussion, we are here to finish it”. So far every panelist has talked about how EHR interop is vital to better care and frankly better Dr. satisfaction.
small biz is building the next gen of AI solutions!
The regulatory quagmire growing around AI is threatening to slow down innovation by small tech companies. This week more than 40 member companies from 32 states were in Washington to meet with lawmakers and administration officials to share their concerns.
@morganwreed spoke with @CNBC ‘s @emrwilkins to emphasize our members are already ahead of policymakers developing innovations that would be impossible under last year's AI rules.

good meeting w/ @CongressmanKean office to discuss Privacy, SEP abuse, and need to fix the 174 R&D tax deduction that small businesses need to build our next generation of AI competitors!
I keep seeing goofy claims that we need this Meta-supported kids bill so that “parents have better tools”.
I have thoughts🧵
Parents already have full control over what apps their kids download (good!)
➡️families.google/familylink/
➡️support.apple.com/en-us/1051…
Meta just wants to shunt the liability for monitoring kids on their products. Because if they can’t, the liabilities could reach into the tens of billions $$$
Meta’s AI bots are empowered to engage in “romantic role-play” with kids wsj.com/tech/ai/meta-ai-chat…
stop dragging apps that have nothing to do with kids, social media or adult content into this fight!
🚨Breaking: Responding to today’s announcement by Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. John James, @MorganwReed, president of the App Association, issued the following statement:
“[This bill is] Meta’s self-serving solution to avoid their responsibility to protect kids is deplorable. It’s a one-size fits all approach built to solve problems social media platforms have with their systems while making small app developers collateral damage.
This bill is not meaningfully different from the failed version introduced in the last Congress…It’s a bad bill for developers, for kids, for parents, and for the app economy.”

The @ycombinator antitrust complaint-fest is out of touch. Claims “platforms stifle innovation”, yet number of tech co. exploded from ~10k in 2000 to 500k by '25 in just US. Ask our EU members dealing w/ over-regulation, DMA isn't helping.

Hopefully @TheJusticeDept and @CommerceGov dismiss this #DMA appeal from a few EU lawmakers. They argue that #DMA is good for the U.S., but #DMA harms prospects for #SmallBiz in the U.S. and around the world.
