First 3 Swift’s back to the north Morpeth colony today, a few days earlier than last year. Let’s see if they can beat last year’s record of 23 pairs fledging 49 young @NTBirdClub

Of 16 nest boxes visited in the colony tonight 12 pairs have 28 young, 2 adults are still incubating and 2 are empty. Including all 27 nest boxes, 21 breeding pairs have a minimum of 45 young which makes this another record year @Z4birding @NTBirdClub

A fascinating day with @RSPBScience who fitted sat.tags to one bird in each of 5 pairs &ringed their 12 well-developed Swiftlets. In the sample group, 9 pairs have a minimum of 18 Swiftlets. 3 birds ringed as adults in 2018 & 2020 were controlled @Z4birding @NTBirdClub @AfSwifts

1/2 RSPB Conservation science are going to use a Morpeth Swift nestbox colony in a 3 year study to compare the foraging behaviour/distance travelled of urban and rural Swifts. They will fit geotags to 5 or 6 birds for a 2 week period in July …

Perfect evening; warm and sunny, good red wine, sunset; no need for music as screaming #Swifts fly around their colony (you can just see them off the bottle shoulder). Too soon they’ll be gone #lastdaysofsummer @NTBirdClub @SaveourSwifts @MoreInMorpeth #morpeth #Northumberland

16 Swiftlets in 10 nest boxes checked this afternoon; including inaccessible nest boxes the number fledging should be low ‘20’s- not quite as many as last year but next year will be even better 😊 @SaveourSwifts @NEE_Naturalist @NTBirdClub @MoreInMorpeth

Lots of activity around one of my two new Swift nest boxes this year. This makes 9 boxes occupied with at least 7 pairs breeding on my house 😊 ⁦@NTBirdClub⁩ ⁦@SaveourSwifts⁩ ⁦@MoreInMorpeth⁩

My 4 Swifts from Tuesday have been joined by a few more; tricky to count a some are in the air and some in their nest box waiting for their mate to return. I want the best photo I can get of them this year...here’s the first from Tuesday @MoreInMorpeth @NTBirdClub @SaveourSwifts

4 birds arrived at my colony today, 3 easily overcoming token Sparrow resistance in boxes I can’t block. The 4th has bigger, Starling problems in the box on a neighbours house! #birdwars #reallifesoap @MoreInMorpeth @SaveourSwifts @NTBirdClub
