To usłyszeli ode mnie liderzy Europy w Brukseli.

I don’t doubt that it will be tremendously beneficial to residents of Sydney. But browsing through flights on e.g. Singapore Airlines, it occurred to me that if you weren’t careful, you might book a flight & have 90 minutes rather than 20 on public transport to Circular Quay.

FRANCE: Rioters have set fire to the historic City Hall in Limoges, France, causing its roof to burn and its clock tower to collapse.
Built in 1883, the 143 year old landmark survived 2 world wars and was designated a protected historical monument in 1975.
It’s gone now.

Fantastic coverage of this event by @BBC 🤩👌🏻 bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmgr… and a new holiday destination for interested Marians! 🇮🇹
Alec Guinness apparently didn’t think Beryl Reid was up to the job of playing Connie Sachs in BBC Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. I’m coming round to the reflection that he may have felt outclassed by her incredible performance.

Crazy how in less than two years Trump went from “You don’t have the cards!” to “Stop playing so many cards!”

🚨FAFO: They saw a 77-year-old woman alone at an ATM in Bromborough, England and thought she was an easy target.
Winifred Peel was withdrawing her money when three teenagers closed in.
One shoved her out of the way. Another lunged for the cash. They were expecting a helpless victim.
They picked the wrong woman.
Winifred grabbed 19-year-old Felix Stoica by the collar and smashed his head into the ATM not once, but THREE times. He was left bloodied, and that blood plus the CCTV sealed the fate of the whole gang.
Within days, all three were in handcuffs. Felix Stoica, Florin Geblescu and Piper Dumitru admitted to the robbery and were sent to prison.
Later, Winifred said her time in the gym is what gave her the strength to fight back. She admitted the attack rattled her, but she was never going to let them walk away with her money.
They thought her age made her weak.
They learned the hard way that courage doesn't fade with age and you should never underestimate a 77-year-old woman.

I once met Penelope Wilton for lunch. She picked the restaurant in Westbourne Grove. I walked in, looked around and said, “I know this sounds silly, but this feels like the restaurant in Betrayal.”
She smiled. “This was Harold and Antonia’s favourite restaurant.” 2/2

I learn that Sir Edward Downes studied composition with Ralph Vaughan Williams, and conducted the opening performance (Prokofiev, War and Peace) in Sydney Opera House on 28 September 1973 (among his assistants was a young Mark Elder). See him at 1'58"
