"Historically, engagement is better for Jews than disengagement or antagonism. There are good reasons to disagree, to oppose, to make that opposition public, to say it loudly. But there are rarely good reasons not to engage." Jonathan Jacoby, @NexusProjectUS Can Jewish groups work with the DSA? With the midterms under a month away, many “politically homeless” Jewish voters are wondering what to do with a new crop of Democratic candidates. momentmag.com/moment-debate-…

Tucker Carlson was accused by British conservative lawmaker Jacob Rees Mogg of “verging on defending Hitler” during a recent interview, in which the pundit said “who cares?” when asked about a potential British defeat by Germany in World War II. It is one of Carlson’s latest clashes with his former allies on the right. Marc Fisher wrote about how the GOP needs to reckon with the former Fox News host's extreme rhetoric. momentmag.com/gop-tucker-car…

On September 30, on what would have been Elie Wiesel’s 98th birthday, we gathered at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for "Honoring the Life, Lessons, and Legacy of Elie Wiesel." In one of the evening’s most moving moments, his son, Elisha Wiesel, spoke of the Museum as his sibling. His father, he explained, had spent more than a decade “conceiving and gestating” the Museum and ensuring it would be just that: a living history, not simply a memorial. It felt especially fitting that Moment, another of Wiesel’s brainchildren, helped bring this evening to life—celebrating not only his extraordinary legacy, but the humanity, curiosity and spirit of the man himself. Moment was proud to partner with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism and the Embassy of Romania for this special commemoration.

“The rabbinic tradition seems to have shared a profound discomfort with the finality of capital punishment. While the Torah authorizes it, the rabbis of the Talmud added conditions making its actual application so difficult that executions became extraordinarily rare.” Rabbi Jeffrey Falick Should Jews support the increased use of capital punishment? momentmag.com/ask-the-rabbis…

“Today’s new Zionist muscle men are, unknowingly or not, mirroring a movement that contributed to Israel’s founding.” In the wake of October 7, a wave of young creators combined Gen Z humor and gym culture to flex their muscles in the face of stereotypes and in doing so, mirrored a philosophy that came long before. Writing for Moment, Sam Franzini examines the rise of a new wave of semitic strongmen. momentmag.com/jacked-jews/

“I didn’t realize I was outside of my life.” There aren’t many Jewish country singers–but Joe Buchanan, who credits his conversion to Judaism with “changing everything” for him, is one of them. Here’s what that taught Joe Alterman about his own faith. momentmag.com/country-singer…

“As we confront our own mortality, it is time to take stock of our unique identity as the bridge between the inferno from which our parents emerged and the light of a precarious post-Holocaust safety.” What does it mean to be part of the aging cohort of 2G (second generation) Holocaust survivors? In a powerful essay for Moment, Menachem Rosensaft reflects on the distinct responsibility carried by the children of survivors. As the second generation maintains leadership and confronts its own mortality, Rosensaft outlines a manifesto for moving from passive witnesses to active attestors of their parents' history. momentmag.com/living-with-gh…

“100 percent politically homeless.” As Election Day 2026 draws near, the stakes for many Americans seem higher than in previous midterms. Will Democrats get their blue wave, or will voters hand Republicans and President Trump sufficient victories to retain the House or Senate—or both? Will the advent of more and more Democratic Socialists into the arena spell doom for Democratic hopes? Will American voters’ concerns about the cost of living, attacks on voting rights, or growing distaste for giving aid to Israel tilt midterm races in one direction or another? And among Jewish voters, how many are driven by the proverbial question: Will it (the election) be good for the Jews? As we have in previous election years, Moment’s Jewish Political Voices Project (JPVP) team has carefully selected a small cross section of voters from all walks of Jewish life in America. JPVP’s unique methodology is to closely follow the thinking of these voters in the months before and after a national election, allowing Moment readers to connect with real people in real Jewish communities who are wrestling with political decisions in real time. Over the years, we’ve found that this process yields far more illuminating information than the anonymous snapshots that emerge from polls. This year, the voters we are following come from small enclaves like Readfield, Maine, and bigger ones like Brooklyn, New York, and Dallas, Texas. Among them, we have an epidemiologist, two lawyers, a school nurse, a college senior and a residential property manager. They vary widely in terms of political ideology, age and Jewish denomination and practice. Two things stand out in this year’s JPVP compared to the past: People are much more emotional in their responses, and more of them are affiliating with Independents and describing themselves as troubled by the two major parties. Jewish voters are hardly alone in feeling alienated; in a New York Times/Siena poll of American voters conducted in May, 43 percent said they’re dissatisfied with both parties. For JPVP voters who express feeling “politically homeless,” Israel and concerns about antisemitism seem to be the main drivers. Discover America’s Jewish voters, in their own voices, by reading the cover story of our latest issue. momentmag.com/fall-2026/

“Everything is going 100 mph right now.” “I’m in a space of resignation around the idea of voting in a way that best represents [my Jewish] identity.” “I am not happy with the vilification of everything Israeli that seems to be popular right now.” The Democratic party is more divided than ever: but what are its voters actually saying ahead of the midterms? Moment’s Jewish Political Voices project follows Jewish voters across the country who are wrestling with political decisions in real time. These are some of the things the Democrats interviewed had to say. Read the full project for more from voters across the political spectrum. momentmag.com/jpvp-2026/

“It’s all too common for murderers to be let out on early release…” “Taking a life is a grave and terrible act” “The reluctance to apply capital punishment leads to the continued loss of innocent lives.” “To support capital punishment in even the most extreme circumstance is inherently not Jewish.” Should Jews support the increased use of capital punishment? Moment asked the Rabbis to find out. momentmag.com/ask-the-rabbis…
