My arm hurts, but I am so grateful to get my first dose of #COVID19 vaccine with @LiebermanNicole. No idea how I coulda made it through the pandemic without this awesome person. It's darkest before the dawn, but the morning will break soon.

Best wishes and great thanks to Mark Chandler, who retired from the UW Dept of Microbiology on Wednesday. I’m forever grateful for Mark’s partnership in the UW MICRO460 Parasitology course. Thanks for all you’ve done for UW students over the years!
Interested in Leishmania genomics and POC assay development? I’m looking for an RS3 or RS2 with a molecular biology/NGS background; bioinformatics experience a plus. Apply via UW Hires RS3 bit.ly/3BLjVvx RS2 bit.ly/3UErpa8

“data” is a plural noun.

Interested in leishmaniasis and its epidemiology in the US? @uwlabmedpath did most of the Leish testing in the US from 9/21 - 7/22. Come chat with me about what we found at @ASTMH #TropMed22! Poster session A, LB-5103. Monday, 10/31.

Before a billionaire schmuck turns twitter into a hate-filled hellhole, I want to thank the incredible staff of the @uwlabmedpath #MolMicro lab for their work this past year. We've brought on really exciting new tests! More than in any other year!

In addition to significantly expanding our clinical NGS offerings (bacterial whole genome ID, amplicon NGS for mixed fungal infections), we now have assays for M. chimaera, and my personal favorite a #syphilis #NAAT!

Oh! And molecular MTB resistance (isolates only).
"This case...demonstrates the importance of local monkeypox virus testing, rather than centralized testing in public health or commercial reference laboratories... enabl[ing] diagnosis in <12 hours and immediate notification to...public health...for isolation & contact tracing"

Sure, I'm biased, but I think the last sentence is one of the most important points in the entire case report.

This is what labs like @StanfordPath & @UWVirology do. It's why clinical labs are the front lines of a public health response.

Description of testing in this otherwise-excellent article requires correction. Multiple non-commercial reference labs (academic/hospital-based) offer monkeypox testing. @UWVirology offers MPX PCR on swabs, serum/plasma, CSF, breast milk, WB, and urine. testguide.labmed.uw.edu/publ…

Our peer reference labs like Mayo Medical Labs & ARUP also offer testing. As with stupidcovid, @melmillerphd was a leader here and brought MPX online. I'm leaving off too many colleagues, but if you have questions #askaclinicalmicrobiologist

Also worth noting that the CDC test is not a sample-to-answer platform. It's a set of reagents (sequences) and procedures. Performing laboratories still need to validate. cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/l…

Another provocative study by @JoannElmoreMD et al showing that dermatopathologists are influenced by the diagnosis of a previous dermatopathologist. This can even influence them to make an INCORRECT melanoma diagnosis. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

There are no commercial tests for monkeypox in the US - only lab-developed tests (LDTs). LDTs essential for large labs to adapt & pivot as we learn more about tropism including need to test non-lesion specimens. This is precisely why the #VALIDAct would be so problematic.

Great thread for #clinicalmicrobiologists
For those of us handling clinical specimens in labs, good to be aware of which specimen types can have #monkeypox present – it’s risk assessment time, let's go! 1/n
Great interview on an critical, under-the-radar topic. I've heard #VALID justified "FDA sent warning letters *to XYZ labs*" but this confusing lab regulation with #LDT regulation. Requiring #FDA approval of LDTs does NOT prevent malfeasance, fraud, bad lab mgmt, poor compliance
Congress may soon pass the #VALIDAct, tightening #FDA regulations on lab tests. David Grenache, PhD, @ClinChemDoc, and Vince Stine, PhD, from @_AACC, joined us on LabMind to discuss the harm #VALID would inflict on #patientcare. #TestsSaveLives bit.ly/3zcYrVV

What amazing work. Case closed.
Where did the pandemic begin? Was it from nature or a lab? Since the start, this fundamental question has gone unanswered. Until now. Out in @ScienceMagazine: SARS-CoV-2 emerged into humans via the live animal trade at the Huanan Seafood Market. science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…
