We have designed schools that demand extended sedentary focus, prioritize certain styles of communication, and punish the physicality that's normal and healthy in young males. Then we pathologize the predictable results. Boys need more movement, more hands-on learning, more male teachers, and more room to be boys without constant correction. The gender gap in college enrollment widened through the 2000s and has held since. When the gap favored men, those fighting for equality fought to change that. Now that it’s the other way around, many just shrug. I don’t think that’s fair. Do you?

Did you know that the UN doesn’t officially recognize International Men’s Day, November 19th, and on top of that, chose that day as International Toilet Day and officially recognizes that instead? Although improved sanitation has saved millions of lives, it’s not a leap to think there was a deeper intention there. A goal of mine and others for years has been to get the UN to officially recognize IMD. It’s time for true fairness. I’m honored that my theme, The Future is Everyone, was chosen as the official theme this year, and I hope the UN and governments do the right thing come November!

I’ve been dealing with a lot of women lately—including mothers—who just don’t understand why I’m advocating for boys and men and who view me as the enemy. I wish they would see the light. Ladies reading this: It might be difficult to escape the mindset that boys and men are privileged oppressors. But stop to think about the boys and men in your life. Your partner, your son, your father, your brother, your nephews, your friends. Don’t you want to see them supported, loved and valued by society? Don’t you want to see their challenges addressed? It does not surprise me that every single firefighter who died saving people on 9/11 were men. Men are our heroes, and we should show them more gratitude.
