Spring in the vineyard brings hope and renewal.
Now that pruning and tying are complete, we wait patiently for the vines to awaken with bud break, the first stage of the vine’s annual cycle.

After the vines are pruned, our tying crews then step in to tie young and old vines alike. We used sisal twine for all our tying endeavors this year.
Tying is done by hand every year, and it’s important for training new vines and maintaining vine structure into vine maturity.

The wild mustard plant, thrives where there is low moisture by outcompeting other species.
Individual plants can separate from the ground and become tumbleweeds. These plants can travel long distances, bouncing over the ground and then get caught in our trellises.

As we plant our oak trees, we take a moment to appreciate and admire the old and sturdy #nativewhiteoak trees that scatter the landscape. This species can live for up to 900 years and is perfectly adapted for this climate.

A close up look at the vineyard shows us remnants of the past year; the last leaves are crispy and barely hanging on. The vineyard will soon begin to burst with green growth for the new season.

The vines still lie dormant, but they are showing the first signs of awakening with tiny leaf buds peeking out from the canes.
We enjoy the calm moments just as much as the busy ones.

The climate at the vineyard can be harsh and unforgiving at times, requiring us to give extra attention and care to our new oak trees. They must be planted at just the right depth, with mulch and microryza, and then staked firmly.
