as someone who deadass just started writing fic its been #lowkey discouraging reading everyone & their moms' opinions about what they should/should not do when writing fic so i can only imagine how seasoned authors feel

The convo asking fic writers to please use multiple words other than "says" vs. other people saying, "That makes your writing sound so much worse & more juvenile or distracting." Is sad. I used to write mostly says, asks, but then found the "words to say instead of said" (1/?)

website: spwickstrom.com/said/. And started adding those because as I use tons of dialogue in my fic I personally was getting sick of all the says/asked constantly. I still use it, and try my best to create the scene around movement or other things, but like, I like adding a

deadpans, or adds, or admits, or replies or whatever else to my dialogues. It feels like no matter what fic writers do they are being heavily criticized. I am always second, third, fourth-guessing everything. I am not trying to be a literary genuis I am just trying to write

do you guys ever get so tired of a story you’re writing (especially a long-form project) that reading it or trying to edit makes you literally want to throw up?

This does fundamentally misunderstand the purpose of fanfic. Fanfic isn’t training wheels for original writing, it’s playing make believe with dolls with a community of folks also obsessed with the same dolls.
On fanfiction. There's nothing wrong with thinking up and dreaming alternatives to famous books and stories . But that's where it should stop. As soon as you decide to write it down -- stop. Don't. Instead, turn that energy into dreaming of your own book, your own story. Want to change Harry Potter? Write a better fantasy. Capture the feeling you want, but create something else entirely. Why live in someone else's world and cage yourself to using their scraps, their plot holes? Be free, writers. Be free, readers. You can leap from world to world. Imagine new places and people. Become infatuated with your own imagination, instead of that of others. There are limitless books out there. Find them, read them, write them. Dream bigger, dream deeper. Maybe it won't be as fun at first, but eventually you'll realize that your mind has superseded the tiny worlds of the Malfoids or Star Wars what-ifs or whatever else is popular. You'll be making your own worlds. You'll be the master. Your magic system. Your characters. You'll be free to defeat the potholes, to create romances, adventures, horrors, deaths. You'll dine on steak and wonder how you ever ate happy meals. I know this because I started writing with the Eragon series in mind, but I refused to make a fanfic. Instead, I imagined my own world, carefully molding it. It was a terrible book, but it opened my eyes to new ideas, new places, new dreams. Use your fanfiction ideas as inspiration, but never as the foundation. Build your own foundation, my friends. Sprout wings and fly. The world of stories is endless. Why chain yourselves?

I remember the first time I read TLG a few years ago, I was on the treadmill. I read "Diamonds" as the song and was like, wtf. I instantly went to play it. Then I was like, Oh duh, THAT'S MY HOLLANOV.

“I would kill for you.” “I would die for you.” Yeah, well, I would heal for you. I’d unlearn my toxic patterns, face my wounds, and become a healthier person so my love doesn’t hurt you.
